I bought this last year for same price. When it works, the interface is fast and responsive. Rewinding, navigating, etc. is all very good. The app integration is also very good and I use the app as the remote more than the physical remote. Connecting headphones to your phone/app instead of the TV is also pretty handy. My biggest gripe is that the Roku freezes or restarts itself A LOT, especially with certain apps like Max (HBO). I haven't been able to solve this. My theory is that the unit is overheating or maxing out. I have to physically unplug the power to the box many times to restart it. I do think it's worth $34 and the experience is better than my Chromecast and Fire stick.

Really depends on the encode. I have an older 4k stick it sometimes does 4k easy and other times it has a stroke. I think this one might be better then my older stick BUT this is the 2021 version. If you are going 4K I'd recommend using the Ethernet port unless you have a really good router nearby.

I have an older Roku. There are a couple apps that cause problems, but not all. I presume it's the apps, not the Roku.

Is there a value to this model over the stick that directly plugs in? I prefer not having another set-top box, but is there substantial value to this over the stick?

Yes, it handles it ok, however, most encoding will happen on Plex side ideally, but 4k streaming is difficult but I've had the best luck on Roku vs Android TV, but slapping a cheap m4000 or p4000 graphics card helped a lot. But overall very pleased with Plex on the Roku, much better than all the other streaming devices.

I own this model I thought they upgraded it. I was streaming game of thrones 4k uhd remix Dolby vision over WiFi and had issues with playback streaming original quality. I had to reboot my router to fix the issue. Menu browsing is sluggish compared to a Nvidia shield
You really can't go wrong with these little units they do alot for cheap,

For my main setup I use the Nvidia shield. We need a wi fi 7 or minimum 2.5 Gbps unit upgrade IMO
Nvidia shield will most likely be 149.99 again this BF

I purchased this a while ago for the same price, and I would absolutely recommend the Apple TV over this. The Roku was perfectly usable at first, but after a few months, it started lagging and having various issues (Bluetooth connections, apps crashing, etc). I tried factory resetting it, but that didn't help much. I understand the Apple TV is significantly more expensive, but in my opinion it's worth it if you can afford it (I got the Apple TV on sale for $90 at Verizon). The Apple TV is way faster (same chip as iPhone 14 so should remain fast for a long time), content and UI looks noticably sharper, apps are better optimized, nice integration with other Apple devices, etc. That being said, I may not be aware of specific use-cases for the Roku that aren't possible with the Apple TV.
