Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

I purchased an iPhone 14 at a Walmart store on 11/12/2024 for $24 (taxes). They mentioned that if I wanted to pay it off immediately at Walmart, the total would be $400 instead of $300 ($8.31x36). They also assisted me in setting up a new Verizon account with the $55/month autopay plan (ID+SSN). The Verizon app shows "36 payments left, with a remaining balance of $399". When I went to the Verizon store, they said they couldn't handle the payoff and advised me to return to Walmart if I wanted to pay it off fully or cancel the plan. Later today, I went back to Walmart, but they couldn't process a return until 24 hours after purchase. They also said there's only a 50/50 chance they can provide a refund since the phone is already opened. They usually only allow exchanges for another phone. Additionally, I would need to handle any Verizon billing issues directly with Verizon.

What's your sales tax? Because if it's 6% then they sold you a $399 phone financed which wasn't this deal. You may want to look at your finance agreement as this would show the amount financed (299 or 399).

Did they even give you the actual current deal price? What was the reason why you wanted to try to get the online only pricing in a store instead of trying online (because ultimately you are left getting the runaround on your questions, going to various stores and not getting the help you were seeking from any staff members in those stores)? The deal for an iPhone 14 for $299 that went live on Walmart.com yesterday is stated to be "online only." Go to the web site--it still states that. Between September and at least recently, the iPhone 14 at Walmart, for Verizon Postpaid service, was something like $11.09 per month for 36 months, which equates to a total of about $400.
Did you buy the phone in a state with a 6% income tax rate? Since you wrote that you paid $24 in taxes, that would imply that the cost of the phone was registered at the store as a $400 phone.

I would recommend you check what your phone payment is with Verizon when you have access to a statement. If it's not $8.31 or within a couple of cents of that number, or if it's closer to, or exactly, $11.09, then you signed up in store for a $400 product. Which would not be a surprise, given that the deal that went live yesterday is labeled "online only." It may take a day or so for Verizon to put a statement up on your account online (I remember when I did the iPhone 13 deal, I think it took overnight to get a statement...and you posted that you bought it today), so you may have to wait a little while to find out.

And if you look at your statement and your monthly installment is $8.31, then it would be more reassuring, and an interesting nuance of getting this deal that Verizon would adjust the price down to $299. If your payment is $8.31, it may be worth inquiring about the cost of paying off the balance on the device because you might find it to be only $299.

Don't hold me to this but your deadlines are 3 days for the activation fee to be refunded, and some number of days (I think it might be 14, but you should really double check that) to return the phone for a refund. I don't know what you would like to do (are you ok with paying a total of $400 for this phone? only you could answer that), but consider thinking what you would like to do.

So here is what i think happened...it is supposed to be an online only deal for the 1st few days. You went to the store, the normal price for the 128GB is ~$400 so that is what you got. You needed to wait a few days before the offer was valid in store too.

You dont have to, the moment you paid off, the phone belong to you. you can canceled the line to save the 2 months services. As soon as it paid off, you can use it right away for $1000 credit toward new iphone 16.

now for the trade in Iphone 16. it is a credit spread over 36 months. the moment you cancel ATT , depend on how many months left, you own the rest of the money on it. This is the way AT&T use it to keep you use their services for 3 years.
I understand when I pay off the iPhone 14 it's all mine. My question is after trading it in for a iPhone 16 for free can I just cancel the service and stay with the iPhone 16??

Read the fine print. My guess is you still need to stay for 36 months.

Yes. That what I did last year. I bought the iPhone 13 with additional line, as soon as i pay it off. I canceled the new line, pay prorate fees for 3 days. I didn't even bother to unlock it. Then use it to trade in for $1000 credit toward my iPhone 15 pro for my main number.

Also it's work if you upgrade as well. I talked to multiple AT&T cs, because the deal is Walmart sell it for $300. You paid it off so you don't own ATT any money. Their policy allow to cancel within 3 days. You can check in the contract when you buy the phone on Walmart
