Got my Verizon iPhone today. added a payment method on my new Verizon account.
dialed 8008374966 and provided the new phone number
Said "pay off device" when asked the reason for calling and follow the prompts.
Fully paid the 299$ for the device with Automated system without talking with a live person.

Then called in and spoke to a live person and canceled the line.

Last time a bunch of us did this, I believe we learned that the clock starts ticking for the Verizon 3 day cancellation when the phone ships. Thus it was recommended to only buy in store and not for shipping. I was able to buy in store, create account, call Verizon to pay in full and then cancel all within 24-36 hours.

If you're waiting 3 days for the shipment I don't see you getting out of the activation fee.

I paid off my phone and I disconnected my line thru chat.. It said it would be disconnected after 1 month.. When I chatted with agent, he said I wouldn't be charged from the day I disconnected even though line is active.. Is that true or should I try to get it cancelled right away? anyone with this experience?
For Verizon, the service ends when you disconnect, but I believe you have the option to reactivate the line within 50 days. It is possible that the chat agent was referring to that.

You'd have set it when ordering through Walmart site. It might have been called the pin code

I ordered 2 Verizon phones. Carrier unlock was a no-go on my first phone which I ended up disconnecting line and will wait 60 days. For the second one, I activated it, paid off and then chatted with an agent. Told the agent that I needed to use my non-verizon work line on this personal phone during upcoming work travel. After some convincing, the agent mentioned that he submitted a request to their backend team and asked to wait 4-5 days for unlock. Planning to hold off on disconnecting for a few days to see if unlock works. Let's see.
What has happened to your 1st phone? What do you mean by "carrier unlock was a no go"? Can you provide more details? Thanks!

So far, going well for me. Here's a summary for others benefit

Nov 17:
Ordered Verizon iPhone

Nov 19:
Shipped and line activated

Nov 20:
- Called Verizon to get phone no and account info (did not write it down during Walmart order)
- Created account, linked phone, added credit card, paid off line per info in wiki
- Disconnected line by Live agent chat
- I cancelled on Day 2 after activation, hoping the activation fee will not be charged. Bill hasn't generated yet
- iPhone is in transit, will receive tomm

Nov 21 Plan:
- When I turn on the phone, it cannot activate since Verizon line is disconnected
- Will activate with T-Mobile eSIM (a flex policy iPhone can be activated on any US carrier)
- Most likely will not be able to unlock the phone. T-Mobile will ask me to deal with Verizon (I believe the IMEI will be tagged as a Verizon phone). Verizon will not unlock since I never activated the phone on Verizon. Still hoping T-Mobile will be able to unlock after a few months/ 1 year on their network
- I did not want to wait 60 days to use it on T-Mobile, that was my primary reason for skipping Verizon activation

I hope Fedex will deliver the phone without issue. If delivery is screwed up, I might be in trouble - Walmart is only liable for the $20 tax, not clear how I can get my money back from Verizon
T-Mobile will definitely unlock it for you. I just have them unlocked my Walmart iPhone 14. You need to contact T-force via X, they'll either process the whitelist unlock instantly or wait until you have device usage for 40 days.

If these phones are flex locked meaning they will lock to the first esim transferred to them, does that mean the new carrier now controls the unlocking? Since they would see no device payment needed on the phone they will all unlock without pushback no? I'm a little confused on which company owns the lock on the device.

On the first phone, I guess I ran into agents who weren't willing to explore additional unlock options. I kept getting the boilerplate response - 'Verizon cannot carrier unlock before 60 days from activation cuz fraud prevention...'. So I eventually gave up, disconnected that line and decided to swap esim after 2 months.
