First they slipped SMR into their Red line, then their SanDisk Extreme and Passport SSDs started losing data. When do their Black drives start shipping without DRAM and using QLC?

Before buying this SSD, my one concern was that I'd seen multiple reports of it running exceptionally hot. I'd also read a great deal of praise, so I decided to take a chance.

As my boot drive, it's currently 37°C. For comparison, the 512GB SK Hynix SSD included with my laptop (which I left installed in one of the two M.2 slots) is currently 42°C. It's been between 3°C and 5°C warmer (usually the latter) every time I've checked.

Both of these temperatures are well within the normal range. The SK Hynix drive is fine, but I was pleasantly surprised that the SN850X is actually running cooler.

It's meaningless talking about how hot an SSD reaches without mentioning the working environment. It will usually be hotter inside a laptop than inside a desktop tower which has better thermal. Secondly, one also needs to know if an SSD can maintain its full performance under certain temperature for prolonged time. An SSD working at lower transfer rate may be servral degrees (C) cooler than another one working at higher transfer rate. All these factors mater when talking about the real world perfermance of an SSD.

As I noted in the message to which you replied, it's a laptop computer.

Specifically, it's a Lenovo ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 (model 21FE001TUS) with an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840HS CPU, Nvidia RTX A1000 Laptop GPU, and 64GB (2x32GB) of Kingston Fury Impact DDR5 RAM. I'm running Microsoft Windows 11 Pro.

I also mentioned that I'm using the 2TB SN850X as the boot drive. I'll add that I haven't accessed any files on the 512GB SK Hynix SSD today. (I left it installed in its original M.2 slot because a free slot was available.)

Both SSDs have identical heatsinks (included with the system) affixed.
