Processor on this has a passmark score at par with a 10th Gen i3 desktop CPU.

Certainly serviceable, but doesn't hold a candle to other machines with faster processors, even around this price point.
question, will this be the best $300 laptop available this bf?

I mean my dad's on an i5-5200u Latitude. When I use his laptop to help him with everyday tasks like online banking it doesn't feel slow at all. I'd be more concerned about the screen, which is reminiscent of the early 2010s, if it's not going to be hooked up to an external monitor. Even that old Latitude had an IPS display with 92% sRGB / 68% Adobe RGB.

If you're going to use a laptop as a primary computer and you're looking at the screen all day, that is THE thing not to cheap out on.

I agree, plus, why would you solder the RAM?

Exactly; that "new" 7520U processor is based on the older Zen 2 architecture. I just bought a used device for only $160 that benchmarks about 50% faster than this $300 "deal": an HP ProBook 445 G9 with a Zen 3-based Ryzen 5625U. In addition to faster benchmarks, it's got more cores & threads (6/12 vs. 4/8), an IPS display rather than TN, and it has upgradable memory slots as opposed to this device that has its RAM soldered to the motherboard.

What's a cheap laptop with a "good" screen?

I got the intel version a month ago and do not recommend it for anyone. The screen is a curse on your eyes. Don't remember exactly but my 2007 Inspiron might have had a better display.

Half the RAM and SSD capacity sounds worse to me.

My old laptop (still sometimes used) is an i5-4200M, and with an SSD/12GB RAM, it's perfectly adequate for everyday tasks on the rare times I use it.

Higher end hardware is one of those things that either you know you need that power, you know why you need that power, or it's spec chasing.

That being said, when I spend my money, I do want to maximize value for said cash.

Go with refurb Latitude 7xxx series. Best bang for buck if screen is the main concern. They usually come with nice matte (antiglare) IPS displays with carbon fiber / metal construction.
