Lmao, this is what I paid for a 16/512 laptop seven years ago. Apple go soak your head.

Talk about an overgeneralization. I have probably saved tens of thousands of dollars at this point over the years watching content that has taught me how to do my own home/auto repairs, woodworking, tech skills, fitness workouts, etc. I've benefitted from a lot of content.

The new mac mini definitely looks like my next computer purchase. Just need to decide what specs I need.

$499 model + 2TB thunderbolt drive is a better use of ~$200 IMO => $699 2.2TB 16GB etc
do you have a drive you recommend?

This is good, but the base M4 16/256 for $499 is just so much more value. Even at $689 (should be the regular retail price for this SKU tbh), you're still paying an eye-watering $189 plus tax for what is effectively another 256GB of storage. If you want that same level of storage, you can easily find a 256GB NVMe and Thunderbolt 3/4 (same I/O bandwidth, so don't overspend here) enclosure on Amazon for less than $75. Like, there is almost zero reason to get that larger storage amount, especially when macOS makes it possible (and easy) to install apps and even remap your home folder to external storage. The 40Gbps bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 & Thunderbolt 4 are more than you'll ever need for your external SSD, with the added bonus that in a year or two if that 256GB extra is feeling a bit cramped, you can easily just swap in another larger SSD for what will likely be very little money at that time. 1TB NVMe drives are already in the sub $100 range. 2/4/8TB drives exist and scale in price of course, but you've got flexibility.

Do you actually think the performance would be the same?

It really depends on how you use the machine, I have a M2 Air 16Gb/1TB because it was on sale in spring, I use about 120GB of space (mainly MS Office use for work) but I have 20TB of storage on my NAS and unlimited MS cloud space. Also on MacOS 15.1 you can install applications on external drives now.

Thats only on m2 macs. M3-4 is dual chips again
Didn't matter, it's still slower. # chips aren't the only factor; just need to compare perf.

Sure it's faster, but is it worth 200 dollars more?
is it worth it to uninstall rarely used software to reinstall new software everytime? Check your existing laptop disk space usage before even thinking about buying the one with 256gb SSD.
This amazon deal already bring down the cost close to MSRP of the 256GB model.

agree the gap between 256 and 512 is actually pretty large for "work stuff" given the 256 probably has 80gb used by OS stuff etc. As an install drive 512gb is a lot more useable. downloads and random junk can go in an external
