I bought this on Prime Day to use with passive speakers and AirPlay. I absolutely love it but I will say that it required an Ethernet connection to work reliably as the wireless connection was super flaky.

If youre a tinkerer, look at getting a pi zero with a usb dac and install picoreplayer with LMS, mooode, or MusicAssistant. All the same functionality for like $30 out the door. DACs are subjective tho but you definitely can get hifi level audio with a usb dac or a dac hat.

Does picoreplayer support casting? I use YouTube Music and haven't found any streamers other than WiiM that support it (other than my Chromecast audio).

Won't you also need an amplifier to actually power the speaker(s)? Or are there DAC/amps?

I did this with PiCoreplayer and it was great until they removed TIdal Connect which killed it for me. It's a great way to go and that particular build has decent resources on the web to do it, but if you use Tidal it's a dead end. I know Moode supports Tidal connect but that's a paid feature. What I did do is use that Pi to install Android TV to it so I could just install Tidal from the Play store and now it's a Tidal Connect endpoint again and I can display the interface on my TV as well as use the DAC hat to feed audio to my amp so it's the best of all worlds.

There are some DAC Amps out there, but they are not very powerful at all so yes you will need a proper external amp to do this.

FYI this has AirPlay 2, the Amp Pro does NOT.

In for one, great deal on likely the best value amp/streamer on the market.

The product description talks about Home Theater. Is this for 2.1 sound only or is there some way to make the Wiim work in a 5.1 mode?

e.g. if you have powered wireless surround speakers that it can stream the rear channels to.

Even for music, I know there are some amps that can mix the stereo input signal to 5.1 speakers. Wondering if that's possible with the Wiim.

This has been my question too and based on my research, we can't get a true surround with this. You can use multiple amps to run multiple speakers but it won't separate out the speakers into front/back/left/right surround config. Looks like Sonos can do it with two amps and the center is modulated.
Would be happy if someone corrects my statement.

For a second, I misread it as Winamp, and I was having visions of llamas getting their asses kicked.

Its 2.1 only, PCM audio supported over HDMI. theyre saying home theater because it supports eARC HDMI which is pretty rare for an amp this price but this is primarily for music streaming with using it for your TV as a side feature. you will get sound from the TV but it wont be virtual surround sound or anything it will be downmixed to 2.1. You cannot hook up 5 speakers to it, if you want to do that then you need an AVR

I have not experienced this whatsoever. Mine runs over WiFi, and is in my basement (feeding outdoor speakers) whose walls are stacked granite. It picks up my WiFi which is upstairs without any issue, and has never stuttered or lost connection.

I didn't do that... I was responding to a question. I'm not the OP who proposed a RaspberryPi as an alternative. Follow the thread next time.
