Table had an absolutely amazing thing going for itself and then just like Google it blew it.

A Tablo 4th generation device cannot stream outside of your home because it does not support the "Tablo Connect" feature, which is necessary for out-of-home streaming; this is due to the different technology used in the newer Tablo compared to older models that had this functionality.

Because of this^^^ I can no longer support this product. Hopefully they fix this issue and in a hurry.

Couldn't you get around this by creating a VPN with your home network?

I believe that's about the only way to do it.

But for the average user that this was designed for, it is extremely inconvenient/not practical compared to previous versions that required no additional set up.

This was designed to be plug&play and if they don't fix it with V5, they will lose the majority of their consumer base.

Can you "screen record" with this live using the Chrome browser?

If you can stream it in your browser, that would be nice -)
A few reviews said to use a ethernet connection.
Anyone tried this?

I hope more people share their hacks or tips to make this work :-)
Thanks !

I assume this requires an antenna? Anyone have recommendations for a good antenna I can place inside of my house?

I have HDHomeRun for ages. Is this somehow better than that?

I'd say no. But I'm currently thinking that if I had to do it all over again, I'd have gone with the 4K HD HomeRun instead of the Tablo. Not that the Tablo is bad, it's just…quirky. Lots of freezing on the Roku Tablo app, the fact that we couldn't watch OTA tv via the antenna when Tablo's systems crashed on NFL opening day was the last straw. Tablo is good, but they are really their own worst enemy.

As an owner of this device, please buyer beware of what you're getting yourself into:

Yes, you need an antenna with decent over-the-air reception.
There is no desktop PC/Mac support; this also means no web browser support.
You can only view recordings from within your internal network.
Television guide listings, even though they are free, you are limited to Tablo's third-party provider's information. Case in point, I have MeTV Toons in my area, but there aren't any channel listings for it because GraceNotes/Zap2It hasn't updated it for my area. Meaning: I cannot record any programing from this channel. There is no manual record option.

Tablo must have a stable Internet connection to access its servers or it will not be able to record even if it's scheduled to do so. This was an issue that recently happened during a major sporting event. Tablo said that they are looking into changing that, but no ETA has been provided.

You can connect an external USB hard drive, but that cancels out the internal flash drive. Also, you cannot extract the recordings from this device.

The Good Stuff:
Its Roku, Amazon TV, Apple TV, and mobile applications have been updated often. Apple TV support has been the latest feature, as it was originally not available out of the box.

TV listings are free. There are no paid subscriptions.

If your TV reception is great, typically your recordings will be as well.

If you like FAST TV, it comes with many of those channels, such as those from AMC, CourtTV, IFC, and QVC and you can record them and fast forward through the commercials.

You can make friends with a lot of disgruntled users in various support forums online.

I use an old rabbit ears antenna and get every local channel with no issues and I'm about 30 miles from the towers. Those thin antennas are mostly garbage. I run this off Wi-Fi so I could place the antenna in the highest point above cabinets. Had this for a few months, and haven't had any issues. Wish I could view outside my house but for what it is, it gets the job done.

Also, this tuner is able to get all the channels much easier than the tv built in tuner.

Thanks, I'm about 30 miles from the antennas in NYC so maybe I'll give it a shot. Mostly just trying to watch Jeopardy and sports haha.

And the app is now supported on the Apple TV

I got it just to be able to record NFL games to watch later in case I'm not home when they're on TV. Use the website, TVFool and enter your address to find which direction to orient your antenna. That makes a big difference.

I was actually debating on buying this last night for $80 bundled with their antenna (a "deal" on QVC) but from what I've been reading you can get a better antenna for ~$20 anyway. I did a lot of comparisons between OTA DVR devices but decided to buy it a little cheaper refurbished without an antenna through tablo's website. Even after looking into it's shortcomings, I think for the convenience factor of having live TV on various devices throughout the house with only one antenna should be worth it.

To the person who asked about screen record with google chrome - I can't see any reason why sharing your screen wouldn't work. Also, if you need to access the Tablo via your PC I have heard you can use BlueStacks android emulator if absolutely needed.

Thank you for mentioning this, I've been reading up on OTA DVR devices and never heard this anywhere. I did read that you can't schedule recordings by time, but didn't realize this means if the show isn't in the listing, recording wouldn't be possible.

Yeah, I can watch the channel, but I can't record anything on it. Which is super annoying.
