I own a non-Deluxe version of the Lift-Away, and it is by far the best vacuum I have used for anywhere close to the price. It does an amazing job on both hardwood and carpet. It does very well with pet hair and long human hair without getting clogged. It is also very good at capturing dust and other particles without them going out the exhaust (as someone with a severe allergy to dust, this is crucial for me). Also one of the easiest vacuums to empty out, and cleaning the filter occasionally is very easy as well. I paid around $120 at Costco a few years ago for it.
If you don't have any carpeting or rugs, then an upright vacuum is probably not needed (there are lighter canister vacuums and even stick vacuums that can perform just as well on hard surfaces), but if you are in the market for a vacuum for rugs, the Shark Lift-Away is probably my number one recommendation (unless you are willing to spend several hundred dolalrs). I have also bought one for my parents and another for my sister because it has made such a significant difference to my health and allergies.
Also, for carpets, a cordless stick vacuum is not going to come close to an upright vacuum. They are best for small apartments with no rugs or carpeting.
