I want to do this for my son as a Christmas gift. I currently have him on a 6a through T-Mobile, contract is done. What is the best way to take advantage of this and transfer service without him knowing before opening it Christmas morning?

Live chat unlock request created a ticket and before the chat ended, I got a SMS that the device was unlocked.

Just buy the phone with the physical sim and let him handle the transfer service when he opens the gift?

Is there anyway to request unlock without opening the sealed box? I have a physical sim for 3 months purchased from Best Buy but I don't want to open the phone.

Not really. First, it's not a given that when Mint CS says the phone is unlocked, the phone is indeed unlocked. Second, even if it's unlocked in Mint's database, my understanding is that you'll need to first insert a Mint SIM into the phone so the phone can connect to Mint, see that it needs to be unlocked, and unlock itself. Third, it's (unlikely, but) possible that Mint may not unlock the phone without seeing it active on Mint's network first.

You can request the unlock but as far as I know it's not possible to confirm that the unlock was done properly without turning the device on.

From what I know, Pixels carrier lock during their first power on, when they communicate with Google servers. It's evident due to the previous exploits that either a) set up the device in offline mode and removed an app b) firewall blocking the carrier lock checks or c) the fact a carrier lock may not be present until the device is restarted for the second time. Depending on why you need to keep the device in-box, the unlock may not be done properly.

So question, I got two pixel 9's with the deal and both seemed to work without issue with my Verizon visible sims. I was able to text, send and receive calls and use data, not being on wifi and never activated them thru Mint. Is there any reason to even activate them with mint or would they get locked down perhaps? According to Tmobile when putting in the IMEI number it says they are unlocked and good to go? I do have two lines of three months of service with Mint and thats how I ordered the phones in the first place. There is no Mint branding on the bootup screen and the Mint app wasn't even installed on it

This was what worked for me after creating an account in the Mint Mobile app.

I was able to order it by logging into the account via a web browser on my computer (not on the phone). Then scroll down near the bottom and look for a 'Deals' link. Should show you the deal for the Pixel 9. Add it to the cart and checkout.

I bought a 3 month physical SIM card plan for Mint from Best Buy. After I activated and created an account, I login and open the direct link to Pixel 9 in another tab, but it doesn't give me an option to purchase it without a year plan. How can I see the option to purchase it without a yearly plan, as a new "existing" user? Can anyone help ?
