Open-box ROG Ally is about the same price at Best Buy. I wasn't a fan of the Deck's materials quality, size, or (especially) the LCD screen. Now that Bazzite is being developed for the Ally, I'd almost argue it's the better investment at this point in the game.

That said, the Deck does have a massive and active community, so any problem you have will be documented somewhere else. Valve also partneredwith iFixIt and repair parts are readily available.

And then when the 2 comes out, you'll say something else is weak and how you can't wait for the 3. Repeat.

Support is key, otherwise it just turns into a paperweight over time.

I purchased a like new barely used ally rog z1 extreme for 250 (steal!) Then purchased the best buy black Friday sale priced rog dock for 30 and a new xbox remote for 40. Battery life sucks on the ally z1 extreme but I only play docked (basically I wanted a Switchlike platform I could run steam plus this will also run Xbox online games and Microsoft games).

I changed the windows screen settings on the console to 60 hz and have it hooked up to my 58" Samsung.
I'm currently running Buldur's Gate 3 in standard medium settings and the game is running GREAT. It's running fantastic in 1080p 60hz med settings with no tweaks.

just a note, the regular Asus rog sucks and should have not even been sold. weak compared to the z1 extreme and x.

the Z1 extreme is awesome but battery life is terrible if you want to be on the go which most do unlike me who only plays docked. the SD card will also eventually burn out so if you want to have more memory you will eventually have to upgrade the inside memory.

the ally x is amazing, but super costly right now. they fixed any problems with the extreme, plus more ram and way more battery.

that said I am super happy with my extreme the way I use it. (always docked)

This deal depends on your case use. Personally, as someone who owned a LCD and now has a OLED, this is an incredible slick deal. However, once Valve announces the SD 2.0, in a year and a half or 2 that runs circles around both, that $366 is something most folks can live with while the $549-$649 becomes an OOF moment.

There are Steam gifts but I think they are instant. https://help.steampowered.com/en/...-B72F-F117Another option could be buy from a company like Fanatical or Humble (both legit sellers), then not 'reveal*' the key until you are ready to gift. At that point you could email or text the key. Both companies are doing sales right now for BF.*you could actually reveal the key at any time but after revealed you cannot ask for a refund so might be safer to buy then get the key later.
Okay, thanks. I really want to surprise the teen.

I get that the OLED model is better, but this is hard to pass on.

As someone who doesn't have a Steam Deck, but up until now missed everything going on, can anyone comment on getting one now and it's competition? Is it worth getting one now?I am utterly out of date on any information for this, but looking to buy this year. Thanks in advance for help, repp for assistance!
I'm in a similar situation, I haven't owned a handheld console in decades and I'm now looking to get into handheld gaming. From what I've concluded and for my needs the Steam Decks offer the best usage, experience, and support for the long term. Some other handhelds might look better "on paper" with better specs, but I value software quality and support above tech specs, especially since I'm more of a casual gamer and I like keeping the same tech gear for many years.

Warning: be aware that many multiplayer games will not work. Apex was the latest to drop support (1 month ago).

This is due to Hackers utilizing SteamDecks/Linux to exploit due to it being easier compared to Windows.
This isn't the reason multiplayer FPS games don't work on the Steam Deck. The reason is because most often, you're not playing a Linux version of the game. You're using a Windows emulator to play a Windows game on Linux. The anticheat software used by online games don't allow players to use emulators, because that is one way hackers get around some of the anticheat protocols. It's not because Linux is easier to exploit than Windows.

I love my LCD Steam Deck. I'd get the Lenovo Go if I was going to get something else. I was interested in the ROG, but after hearing about the cooling issues, the heat melting the SD card, and the fact that they fixed the problem by underclocking (so it doesn't matter if it has better specs).

Here's some reasons to buy:
  • The track pads are great on the Deck.
  • The interface is without compare. Windows just isn't built for a handheld.
  • There are tons of modification possibilities. My favorite is the community database of controller configurations.
  • There are tons of great games you can find for cheap that run perfectly, like Cult of the Lamb.
  • Why would you want to play online FPS games with a controller anyways? You'll lose to all the mouse and keyboard players.
  • It's great to see your steam library in a Valve designed OS.

OLED or Don't buy. woot

Also, Steam Deck weak ass cpu. Can't wait for Steam Deck 2.
Oh no, I can only play about 98% of games ever made, with at least 80% in full 60FPS.

The "weak ass" CPU will play everything from PlayStation 1 all the way to PS4 games in high FPS and fidelity.

And why are you so obsessed with OLED if it's $500 for a "weak ass CPU"

I have the LCD deck and it is perfectly fine. I have a 3rd gen/most recent OLED monitor, OLED phone, miniLED laptop and let me tell you- this OLED or bust ideology is such wank, the LCD is perfectly fine and I could care less paying $200 more to upgrade to an OLED.

I'd genuinely be more upset departing with $200 more than I'd care for looking at the OLED display. And I think it's a better position to get a LCD deck used on FB marketplace for around $250. Insane deal and you won't feel robbed when the Deck 2 comes out. $250 and it's the same performance/FPS as the OLED deck.

Of course though, if people want to shell out the $$ for the OLED display, better battery life and other improvements that's fine too! Many people really fall in love with their Decks and they become their main gaming device, so the value proposition can definitely be there, regardless of the aging API chip (that still fares very well- miles ahead of the Switch)

It's pretty comical how much slack people cut the steam deck just because it's made by valve. I saw a Reddit thread of people bragging how great Elden Ring runs on the deck and how they love it and they were literally calling 20 frames a second good performance. Any other company's product would be shit on for that type of performance, but of course valve can do no wrong.

I sold mine and bought an Ally X instead; it's a night and day difference. Don't fall for the steam deck hype; it's a very mediocre product at best.

I have both. Like you, I was out of date. I read a lot. Considering what's going on, I recommend either this deal for the Steam Deck or the Ally Z1E (the Z1 Extreme), which can be had for under $500 and offers more power. The Ally Z1, priced around $300, is also excellent and probably sufficient for your needs. Most people suggest going for the Z1 Extreme because it provides more value for the extra cost. All will meet your gaming needs. I believe the ROG Ally may not have enough battery life for true portability, as people often plug it in while playing. Personally, I like that it might limit my screen time. Also Ally runs a slim version of Windows 11 (Armoury Crates), for some it's a turnoff but I kinda like it. I use mine to read pdf books as well as gaming.

Additionally, you can buy a docking station for around $30 that converts them into a console. They double up in function. I bought the 'Baseus 6-in-1 Docking Station for Steam Deck/ROG Ally X/Legion Go with HDMI 2.0 4K@60Hz' from Amazon, and it's very nice. I have the official Steam Deck dock station, but I think this one is even better than that. That's the talk of 2023-24 and what I consider year of the handhelds.

You can upgrade the hard drive yourself to 2TB. Depending on your toolkit, it may take an hour or two. While some people claim it only takes 15 minutes, that's typically the time removing and inserting the HDD, the literal process of doing just that, which make it seem deceptively simple than the actual reality. Be careful when taking apart the case, as it requires skill. The internal J-hooks need to be pried the right way to avoid damaging the case. What I like is after installation of a new hard drive the cloud reinstallation of Windows 11 was easy!

With Steam, on the software side of installing Steam OS, they used a compression extension that needs to be extracted. Then mount. If you decide to install Windows 11 for SD, Valve released the drivers necessary for it to function properly. So SD has the service support.
Thanks for the details, and I heard the HDD upgrade remarks and definitely was not buying it was that easy lol. I have a Steam library and might be worth trying. Battery life would be nice… 🥴

This is one of the more memorable threads I've seen here in a while. I have a 7800X3D/RTX 4070 rig connected to a 32" 4K OLED display I also use for work on a Mac Mini, but I realized I only play games like Enter the Gungeon or Balatro and it's overkill. My kid, on the other hand, has a Meta Quest and had been dying to play Alyx.

I picked up this LCD deck and will try it connected to my monitor to see if I can do 1080/60 in the games I care about. If so, this is a great buy for my huge Steam library and my occasional flying for work, and my kid will be thrilled to have access to a more powerful desktop.

20 fps on Elden Ring? Maybe with Ray Tracing.
I beat both Elden Ring and the DLC by playing 50% on my PC and 50% on the Steam Deck. I get a solid 40-50 fps on mine. Plays very well for a handheld.

You're an Asus fanboy on a Valve thread, it's OK, we all have our preference. Let me know how warranty support is with Asus though Big Grin

I think you've sold me lol. Anything worth sharing about what's worth buying, accessories or game wise?
