Cheaper one -> one chipset -> only for newer machines
More expensive one -> two chipsets -> supported by all machines
I am surprised no one mentioned the excellent customer support. I own both this and acasis TB3 enclosures. If you have any questions about your acasis, good luck. Acasis makes the best enclosures until this OWC one came out. OWC stands by its products and also has excellent customer support. That is worth a lot. If you are going to get a high end NVMe like the 4TB or 8TB SN850X, dont cheap out on the enclosure.

Intel JHL7440 chipset.

The enclosures that support earlier usb versions include an additional chipset, Realtek RTL9210B, from the website.

Since I'm only using a mac mini m4 I went with the cheaper option but I think many would want the additional usb support.
I have a version that supports USB C, the TBU405 screw fix version. Four screws hold the thermal pad against the SSD. I used a thick SSD thermal pad.

I then purchased this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VDX7NNG
"Easycargo 2pcs 40mm Heatsink Kit 100mmx40mmx20mm + 3M8810 thermal conductive adhesive tape, Cooling Aluminium Heat Sink "
and affixed it to the TBU405. It just fits between the screw holes and runs the entire length of the enclosure.

I have one on a M1 Mac Mini and another on a M2 Mac Mini. No way they will ever overheat now.

And for some really weird fun here is someone using the TBU401 and a m.2 to PCIe adapter to run a 25Gb network adapter on a MacOS and iOS device. https://kittenlabs.de/blog/2024/0...macos-ios/

I was actually researching this enclosure yesterday because I knew I would be buying a new SSD soon during the BF sales. I originally wanted to buy a Samsung T9, but then realized that getting an M.2 drive and USB4 enclosure would be the better route.

This other enclosure was another top contender that seems reliable as well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...D1N0&psc=1
Which drive / enclosure did you decide to go with?

It was driving me nuts to decide on an enclosure the last few days with the sales. I finally said F it and ordered. Shame on the long delay in shipping, but I accept that and in no rush.

The last 2 days, while I was deciding, I also was debating what filler item at OWC I would have to buy to make the $99.00 free shipping. Just as I finally said I don't want buy a filler item to get the sale price and the shipping fee cuts into the sale price was unacceptable to me. I deleted from my cart and wanted again to see the total of shipping, shipping was free. That was the push I needed to buy today.

I'm not sure how or why. I thought might be a cyber Monday thing, cause for the last 2 days it was charging shipping. I just tried to add to cart to purchase, after reading your post, and it is still giving me free shipping.

Good Luck,

You got lucky. Not me. I paid shipping and when I contacted customer support, they wouldn't give.

Just picked up this and the 4tb 990 pro, but I'm not a heavy user. Overkill?
Probably, but you also got a 4TB 990 Pro, so cost must not be a major factor.

I bought one of these recently to go with my m4 mac mini and haven't had any problems. The one thing that has annoyed me is how bright that LED on the front is. I covered it with tape
It can't be THAT bright... can it?

Mac user better pick a enclosure with Intel JHL 7440 chip. The newer chip ASM2464pd has compability issue with mac system which cause a much higher idle temp. I tested multiple enclosure and now picked one with JHL7440+JMS583 solution. It is not the fastest speed(Max reading speed is about 300mb/s slower than 2464, write about the same) but it is the most stable solution especially when you install the Mac system in the enclosure. Lower temp will cause less random issues. Fan is not needed for JHL7440chip. My temp never goes over 45c even under long time heavy load. Tested 2464 enclosure temp can goes over 60c when idle.
Received the OWC and ran BlackMagic for 30 mins connected to M4 Mac Mini. Recorded 3173 MB/s (write) and 3140 MB/s (read) speeds (edit: Samsung 990 Pro 4TB); no thermal throttling observed. Enclosure temp never got higher than 44C (111F), barely warm to the touch. Idle temp feels lower. After putting the Mini to sleep for an hour, the OWC enclosure feels cold and the front LED is also turned off.

I think the overheating issues is not just because of the faster transfer speed but based on issue that on macOS the chipset is continuously on high power mode. Pls read the issues I found online below.

My use case will be mainly for Mac Mini M4.

Here's what I found online regarding issues with Mac Silicons but I'm not sure if it's legit:

1.) chipset might operate in a high-power mode continuously on macOS, which could lead to higher temperatures and potentially affect performance

2.) chipset may not perform optimally with Apple Silicon Macs, potentially running hotter because it doesn't enter an idle power state effectively. This behavior contrasts with its operation on Windows systems, where it transitions to a lower power state when not actively transferring data

3.) There are reports that M4 Mac Minis cannot boot from SSDs housed in enclosures using the ASM2464PD chipset. When attempting to boot, the device may start, the drive will light up, but then the Mac Mini shuts down and restarts

4.) There are indications that the ASM2464PD might have compatibility issues with certain Thunderbolt chips in older Mac devices. It is reportedly more suitable for Macs released after 2022 that use newer Thunderbolt chips
I've no overheating issue with mine. Received today and tested it for 30 minutes (continuous read/write) and did a sleep test also. Scroll up and see my reply to another poster. Didn't test booting from SSD as I won't be doing that.

Congrats on receiving your owc 1m2 Smilie
Thank you for sharing your observations.
Boy it's fast and the temp is very good!
What brand and model of SSD?
