Acemagic are the ones reported to have malware/trojans loaded in the default install awhile ago no? Fresh install + format is a good idea. No idea if risk of potential malware embedded in firmware is huge with them. This is a good deal tho compared to Beelink S12 Pro for specs + DDR5 memory stock.

A fresh windows install does nothing if the firmware is compromised…. The pc can phone home even with Linux on it , with compromised firmware.

This does nothing to get rid of the malware if in the firmware! In fact, you don't even need to find the "Windows Key" to reinstall windows as it will connect to MS to register once Windows gets reinstalled.
To answer the question "Can you really avoid malware if the firmware includes it?" correctly, the answer is yes, but not easily and far more complicated then "reinstalling windows"

It's been a while since I've seen an N100 mini pc deal. Good price on this one with DDR5 memory, though only 12GB.

Tempted as I need something low power, but more horsepower than a Raspberry pi.

OP, might be worth linking the upgraded version on the same page [amazon.com] for $149.

It looks like a bump from 12GB/256GB to 16GB/500GB for $20 more, which seems worth it, though it does not seem to ship to California...

can you pair these up with a decent size touch screen monitor to create a touchscreen workstation for kids?

It might be wise to use a tool like dropWPBT with this system to be on the safe side. It disables the Windows Platform Binary Table (WPBT) in the firmware.
