That's...not an easy question to answer.

Is the sensor inside it decent? Absolutely. It'll take lovely images, even in the hands of amateurs (thanks to the plethora of automagic modes in the camera). In manual modes, it'll take excellent photos in the hands of someone experienced (as would nearly any camera, to be fair).

Is it an exceptionally good camera? No. No, it is not. It's cheap feeling plastic, poor ergonomics, lacks a touchscreen (in 2024, that's a joke), and the image processor is an older generation which is lacking much of the subject detection autofocus that is Canon's bread & butter.

It's the camera body shown to you in a store to get you to upgrade to a better model, such as the R50 or R10 or R7.

Now, is it a good deal with two kit lenses for $300? That's a hard one to answer too. For me, someone who has had film SLRs, DSLRs since the early 2000s, and has a Canon R8....the R100 is a joke of a camera that is a waste of my time. But for someone just starting out and who doesn't want to be overwhelmed with manual settings (or doesn't want to get "older" hardware)....it's hard to find a better "value" than this sale.

It's a camera that once you outgrow, you probably wouldn't want to return to at any cost.

If you can afford it, the R8 kit with the 24-50mm for $900 would absolutely destroy this camera -- night and day. Like taking a toothpick to fight a tank. Yes, it's three times the cost, but I think you're getting much more than three times the camera.

Horrible advice.
R100 with the two lens kit $299.
R50 body only $500+
Seriously? If you are paying that much for a R50 why not go one small step further for a RP, R8 or R7?
What are you talking about?

R50 is $429 with the same trash 18-45 kit that he/she would probably immediately upgrade anyway... We're talking $130 more and you get a much better body in general (less the 55-210 lense that I see on FB marketplace for $45-$75).... Sure, another $450-$600 more and you could go for the r10/rp/r8/r7...

The R50 is a better entry level "bang for your buck" scenario.

Just look at the tech specs r100 vs r50...

The articulating touchscreen and superior AF on the r50 alone justifies the $130 more...

edit. I just reread that he/she wanted to buy the r100 for simply testing a control ring... the r100 would suffice for that....

Dude. Go to schedule an appointment with your eye doctor.

R100, with two lenses, as of the guy asking for advice, right in this thread, were listed at $299 for the entire kit.

And you were telling him why R100 is a trash deal and he should go with the R50, as of posted, listed as $500+ on the same canon website?

R100 is a hot garbage for $500 but hot butter slick deal for $299.

R50 maybe better than a R100 for $100 more but definitely won't worth it for more than double the price tag.

Thanks for this. My daughter is considering trying photography out. She has small hands but I can't really tell the size of this camera. I use a Nikon D5500 which I consider compact for me but it would be too cumbersome for her and I'm sure a camera too big for her would turn her off. The two lens kit is oos but I might go for the single lens kit for her. Anyone consider this camera "small"?

It's tiny -- I'd argue the grip and size is rather diminutive. I think it's the smallest and lightest R-series camera Canon makes.

Another question to ask...will the R100 take significantly better pictures than an iPhone 14??

That depends on you and how you use it. The iPhone 14 has a 1/1.7" 43mm2 sensor; that's small. The R100 has an APS-C 329mm2 sensor. All else equal, the R100 sensor has almost 8x the area so collects almost 8x as much light. That's a huge difference and the R100 will always have the *potential* to capture far better pictures and the control interface has far more controls. The iPhone is fully automated.

But better potential depends on the user. A novice user in bright light, with a subject 20 feet away that isn't moving too quick will take a better pic with the iPhone. This is why there are lots of dumb Youtube videos with titles like, "The iPhone takes better pictures than a $5000 DSLR!"

Change any of those easy conditions and the R100 will likely do far better.

Will go OOS fast at this price. The camera is basic and barebones, but at $219, there's no better option.

Inexpensive camera for my high school kid taking photography. Will also double as a decent backup body for my R7 when taking photos of my highschool kid's sports.

The best digital camera for anyone learning photography in school would offer easy manual adjustments of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. Unfortunately cameras like the R100 bury those settings in menus, favoring auto modes. Grab a used 5D/6D off MPB or locally for $250 and throw a nifty fifty on it.

Any of you have lots of use with these an smartphones? Is there much reason to have a dedicated camera with devices like the s24 ultra series existing? I know my friend would use her real camera when doing paid gigs; but she had no problem at all when it was just me an her using her iPhone 10 years ago an making it look quite good. More recent reviews say the s24 trumps most cameras. But I don't really trust tech reviews since we've caught the bigger channels working together to lie to sell for people obviously providing them with incentives. I know we now have a pro mode with more realistic iso an other detailed settings

Do all pro cams get grainy when you look close? I make some high res art for the wall but many high res media I print start to come out with noticeable pixels around 7 inches. I would like to eventually make bigger things like posters; up to a blanket that's 12ftx10ft. That has very high quality images
