I used 402S (same speaker, smaller woofer) in my theater room for surrounds for a while. I liked them. Highly recommended for a 5 channel setup, because the bi-directional design helps bounce sounds around the room for a more immersive surround experience (despite what the Atmos guys say!).

I swapped them out for RP-600M, which sound better, but I missed the surround experience, so I had to add more speakers to upgrade to a 7 channel setup! That's the way this hobby goes....

My 402S are currently hung on the walls of my basement for music. They do a great job in that context, again, filling the whole basement with sound. I honestly wouldn't mind swapping the 402S out for these 502S for fuller sound signature....

If my couch is against my back wall, would you recommend placing these on the wall behind the couch or to the sides of the couch facing in?

That's part of the beauty of these, it shouldn't matter too much. I had mine on the back wall.

That being said, I believe Dolby's recommendation is to put them on the sides, not on the back wall.

okay let's assume the 600M ii and the 502S (old version) are same price. Which one would you prefer and why. Please help, struggling to make a decision on this one.

For me it depended on seating arrangement. With my couch flat against the back wall the 600M don't fit, they protrude way out. The 502S have a flat back with angled speakers, so they can sit on the wall and put sound out in a cone.

Would these work in the back corners of a room? Like if you lined them up so the back is facing the corner and one driver faces directly forward while the other driver faces directly inward?

Are you using them as REAR surrounds or surrounds? Placement matters and if you're dabbling into >3.1 setups you should do it correctly. Stuffing speakers into a corner is not a good practice. Your surround channel (The 4 and 5 of a 5.X) are intended to be placed immediately next to your listening position, not behind. REAR surround (the 6 and 7) of a 7.X are intended to be set up immediately behind the listening position.
All that being said, you can really do whatever fits your space and then EQ for the room if your AVR supports it.

Yeah, looking for something that could be used as the back surrounds in a 5.1.4 (with 4 ceiling atmos speakers) that fit in a corner of a room with wall mounted or in-wall*, about 30 degrees behind the main listening position at ear height.
*(if in-wall, would have to be on the back wall since the side is an exterior wall with insulation that I don't want to have to remove)
Curious if in general a bipolar works with such a setup, since I don't have enough room to have a big bookshelf speaker on a stand

That honestly might be a decent use case for these. I agree with you in that I wouldn't want to go digging into an exterior wall to mount in-walls either! These would work but given where the approximate location would be I wonder if a more typical front firing speaker angled directly at the MLP would be a better use. Though the bipolar setup might nicely fill that rear space with sound.

That's been my experience. Bipolar speakers fill the surround environment

It depends on what you want to do with them and the angle you're using them for. The 600 m2 was designed to be a L/R bookshelf, so if you were gonna use it for surround sound, you'd need to plan ahead.

Erin's audio corner reviewed the performance of the 600m IIs. Linked here: https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/...p_600m_ii/ pay attention to the globe plots. I also own them and agree with what the data says. Horizontally they have solid performance +- 40 degrees off center. Vertically you'll get decent all around performance about +-20 degrees, but the midrange will vanish once you get 5-10 degrees off axis.

Because you're talking surround, I really don't think the 600s are the way to go because of the bulk. If you were talking front height L/R, a hidden center with an AT screen, a pretty big room or a setup where the sound field doesn't need to be massive, the 600s might fit your needs.

Otherwise 502s are designed to spead the sound well. I don't own them (yet) so I can't give a valid comparison.

Not sure if that helps or makes you more confused.
