Left Blue Iris for Scrypted six months ago and holy smokes do I not miss the abysmal mess of a program that is Blue Iris.
I hadn't heard of Scrypted before. I'm just beginning my setup of blue iris in a proxmox vm. What makes you like scrypted instead?

Looking it up, it seems that scrypted costs $10/year/camera. That's more than it's worth for me, if I want to have several cameras locally. I'll plan to store recordings on a local nas, as I'd prefer to avoid recurring subscription fees when possible.
Tell me more.

I have 8 4k (wide angled/double lens) cameras locally, which is like having 16 feeds with a dedicated PC that is only consuming 37 watts recording them all to WD purples.

The remote viewing is horrible and my FPS is only 3-5, so whenever I want to see something in 4k, I have to go into my server closet and fire up the monitors in there.

Are you running scrypted on a dedicated PC? How is that AI? False detections? I have a bunch of trees and in the summer shadows give out a ton of false hits.

Edit: Ahh, scrypted is a per camera annual license, f that.

Yeah, that may have been the case. Been a while.
ipcamtalk owner is a head case. He's mad at everyone for everything. Doubly so when they point out when he's wrong about things. I'm sorry you had to endure that without knowing he's nuts.

I setup many BI systems and here's my Thoughts for saving electricity with BI running a lot (10+ cams).
Get a laptop with a modern CPU (meaning check the cpu passmark scoring!). Get some external storage or NAS. Run BI with all cams using both main stream and a secondary sub stream. CPU and electricity will go way down.

Thought deal was dead but they just changed the promo code. I think we need to use "CMDEALS2024" instead to get the 20% off.

I set up Blue Iris 4 a long time ago for my work. That interface succccked.

I caved and bought the 8 license pack for my Synology. At least the license is transferrable when I upgrade to a newer model.

Can you run Frigate without the coral GPU?
Yes, Coral just makes it faster and more efficient. It can also run object detection using your CPU or GPU. So you can try out Frigate on any computer(even a Raspberry Pi), and add a Coral NPU if you like it. Coral NPUs are available in a variety of form factors, starting at $25: https://coral.ai/products/

Fender is the scum of the earth. If Blueiris is still allowing fender to sell discounted licenses on his site that is enough for me to tell people to not use Blueiris.

When you live in a ripoff electricity state like CA that charges over $0.50+ per kWh, a xeon without a quicksync igpu running BI is a huge waste of electricity.
And will absolutely choke if you try to throw anything 4k at it.

For w/e reason blueiris has some sort of threading limit when it comes to software encoding and wouldn't use multiple cores for 4k streams and would have all sorts of sync issues with direct to disk even with 4k.

My i5-6500 optiplex micro runs circles around the xeon server due to quicksync.

For business or heavy load xeon plus a dGPU would work too.

You really have to do the math on power cost vs cost of equipment. I've run dual Xeon processors and they idle at way lower than 160W. However, running Blue Iris, you aren't idling. I've also done a lot of testing with different processors for power consumption (also using Blue Iris). Using quicksync saves absolutely nothing in power. All it does is offload from the CPU, but the GPU is still using roughly the same power. Where I eventually settled was a 12th gen i7 that could run Blue Iris along with all the other stuff I use. I do CPU only with Blue Iris. As soon as I switch to using the GPU, cameras start dropping randomly. I've been running Blue Iris for over 10 years and still just stick with CPU only, no GPU. It's been more reliable that way.

I run 21 cameras and I dont do 4K (1 or 2 settings below is plenty resolution), and I keep the frame rates around 20fps, and use dual stream to display the lower resolution while it records at full, and displays full when I click on the camera. My system is without a video card, a GPU built into the CPU, a Intel i7-8700 3.2ghz. I use a SSD for boot and a 2TB SSD for main write, then offload a couple months of activity to a HDD to voer-write after a year. So far I really like Biris(been using it for over 7 years). It has its quirks, but I am NOT doing anything rental. I pay to buy, and Yes Blueiris does try to get you to update with new features every year or 2, but $40-50 or even less to upgrade/support is NOT so bad. I DO NOT support theiving companies like Adobe, and many others. I Will seek out honest over convenience.

Yes, this is what I do, run 2 streams. Sounded complicated at first. Its not. You can do it. Plenty helpful videos on Youtube University.

is this program even worth it? 5 years ago I bought it, setup a NAS and bought some Amcrest cameras. Could never get the damn thing to work. Realized Amcrest left wifi vulnerabilities on the cameras.... finally said f-it and sold my soul to google nest

I had used BI for years but could never get it to be 100% stable. It would bug out frequently (often related to storage management) and require restarts. A few years ago I gave up and moved to SecuritySpy on an M1 Mac mini. It's more expensive but works so much better. Also the mini takes hardly any electricity. I also moved from hard drives to all SSDs, which made reviewing/finding footage a lot quicker.

This would work, yes. But compare the alternative solutions first. Frigate is less buggy than Blue Iris, and it's free open source.
How do you view the cameras remotely with frigate? Like if I wanted to get motion detection notification, playback camera feed or view live feed is that all possible with an app on android?

The way most people do this is using Home Assistant. There's an app, and you can configure notifications. Here's an example: https://youtube.com/shorts/_hES6gwmxpE

Frigate also provides a Progressive Web App (PWA) that you can use on your phone like an app to do all the usual NVR functions.

Not sure the hate towards blueiris but I love this software. Been running it for years on multiple sites. Its never once crashed. I also use codeproject ai with a coral tpu and that is a game changer.

I have tried scrypted. Its nice but not as feature rich as blueiris is. Also at $10 a camera its a bit much for me to spend.

Navigating blueiris through the web interface is extremely quick for me when looking for footage, especially with ai detections going.

Some tips: I use windows 10 or 11 enterprise. Gets rid of all the bloatware microsoft puts in there. Also a must is to run the blueiris optimization guide. You have to configure dual streams. CPU useage is almost non existant after doing that. I can run it on an extremely old i5 processor with 8 cameras and no issues.

Another tip: dont buy the coral usb device. That thing is unreliable. The physical cards are far superior and never crash.

On another note: scrypted might have some competition from ubiquiti. They added 3rd party support to their nvr system. Its top notch system and only $299 for the hardware unit. Doesnt have detection with 3rd party cameras (yet).
