Leno returned to 11:30pm time slot

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top [tmz.com]

Quote :
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
No words on what will happen to Conan and Fallon... whether they both will get pushed back one hour of if one of them will be fired.

I prefer Leno at 11:30 than 10:00.

I think affiliates will ultimately fall in line and air Conan wherever the network wants him aired, and follow suit with the rest of the programming as well.
maybe. but in large markets like here in LA, they make a lot of money airing syndicated shows like the Simpsons and The Office during that time slot. They don't have to share a penny of that with the network. I'm sure the haves and have nots will argue as well.

Just general questions to those arguing that Leno was forced back to the Tonight Show- Does Leno not have the same right to walk away as Conan? They both had contracts for specific shows and time slots, right? So if we are to believe that Leno was as much a victim of NBC as Conan, and not the one pushing for the change, why not walk away like Conan?

In the end it'll come down to dollars and cents though, if Conan gets them better ratings and bigger ad buys, they'll want Conan. Also consider that with a Conan as a lead-in, they could feasibly run those shows at 12, 12:30 and 1 (whenever the timeslot after Conan is) up against the second tier late night shows, instead of the really old sitcoms and cartoons that they run now, like King of the Hill or That 70s Show in some places.

I wonder how much steam O'Brien will let loose before his Tonight Show ends right before the Winter Olympics start next month. Confused

I hope NBC has its figurative bullet proof vest on b/c O'Brien will be firing away. Whee

I believe that as part of his ousting Conan agrees to not trash NBC at all.

Is that stipulation for a future job or his current job? Or both?

While it is NBC, I wouldn't think that they could be that stupid.

He has been letting loose. Sounds like the show may be over this week, however.

I don't think this week will be it. I think they'll go at least next week.

Conan letting loose though probably won't happen once his severance package is done and in his bank account.

It's not about rights; it's about ratings, entertainment, and every comedian's desire to be Johnny Carson's heir -- Leno's ruthless, backstabbing desire to be Johnny Carson's heir.

Money. That, he's not ready to retire, and NBC will NOT let Leno go to a different network. They've shown that multiple times.

NBC can survive without Conan, but Leno for now is their breadwinner.

Leno doesn't want to go to another network. His Tonight Show contract was up at the end of '09, all he had to do was wait 7 months. Instead he signed a new contract to go on at 10pm, and now he's trying to put the blame on NBC that they won't 'let him out of his contract'.

I think it's once he leaves. He's trashing them nightly, although much of it is tongue in cheek rather than candid.
