Leno returned to 11:30pm time slot

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top [tmz.com]

Quote :
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
No words on what will happen to Conan and Fallon... whether they both will get pushed back one hour of if one of them will be fired.

I prefer Leno at 11:30 than 10:00.

And Leno did? I believe it's the affiliates that controlled the fate. They wanted the 10PM slot to have something that was appropriate for that time slot, not an 1130-style show at 10PM.
Leno hanging over Conan's head has nothing to do with the 10pm show (he damaged it with weak lead-in, but that's a separate issue). Leno hung over Conan's head by taking the Tonight Show gig back, I don't think any host with integrity would've done that a mere 7 month after he passed the baton. If, 7 months after retiring, Carson had shown a willingness to return to the Tonight Show, Leno would've been kicked to the curb faster than a 20 dollar whore.

so according to you, those who want to keep something the like is bad if it gets in the way of someone else wanting it too?

No, it's b/c viewers prefer Leno over Letterman. Wink
You know what's funny, for all the ratings edge that Leno has gotten over the past 15 years over Letterman, Letterman's show gets higher ad rates and Letterman himself gets paid more (part of that is due to the fact that his own production company produces the show, but not all of it). Leno is paid in the $20M range while Letterman is paid in the $31M range. The reason is that Letterman CONSISTENTLY dominates the 18-49 demo, while Leno's demo is consistently getting older and older. Leno's days are numbered. His old fanbase is loyal, I'll give them that, but they can't remain loyal from beyond the grave, nor from beyond the 8pm bedtime. Leno himself is quickly becoming an old man. NBC will find themselves looking for a host in a few years, and they'll wish they had a certain redhead with a massive established fanbase as opposed to a newcomer.

No, those who want to keep something they like should keep it, not give it up and then ask for it back. That's called an Indian-Giver. If Jay Leno didn't want to pass the baton to Conan, he shouldn't have. He didn't have to agree to retire. He could've said no, and he could've walked away from NBC and taken his show to another network. He made a bad decision.

but according to everyone involved, Leno didn't ask for it back. NBC is the one who came to him about it.

the programming director for NBC, forgot his name, was on the Dan Patrick show and he said it himself. Leno denied going to NBC on his little speech that one night.

I dunno, even if Leno did change his mind, I still don't see anything wrong with it. If I'm Leno, I would have done the same thing. I know Conan fans don't like it (I like Conan and Leno equally), but seriously, this is big boy business.

...
Letterman is just about as old as Leno, so I can't explain the 18-49 appeal factor of Letterman over Leno, if your stats are correct. But we all agree Leno > Letterman in overall stats.

Yes, I agree that in about 5 or 10 years from now, whichever company (FOX?) has O'Brien will rule supreme in the 11:30 p.m. time slot. By then, Letterman and Leno will probably have been retired. It'll be interesting to see the 3 go head-to-head if and when O'Brien returns in Sept. (again, w/ FOX?). I think O'Brien will be a distant 3rd (outside of the first couple weeks when he'll obviously be #1 due to the newness) but year by year, he'll chip away as the older crowed dies off (that sounds sad, but I'm keeping it real) and new younger crowd latches onto O'Brien.

I don't dislike any of them (despite Letterman's sleeping around), so I'll find something good to watch on that time slot regardless. nod

Can I have some of what you're smoking?

Leno wanted out from NBC but they made him stay. I don't think he really wanted the Tonight Show back at all, just that he got forced to go back to it by NBC.

If Fox is getting ready to give O'Brien an 1130 show, the Wanda Sykes show would be what they might build upon. I just don't think Wanda will still be around come September, that show is ghastly awful.

Wanda Sykes is 1000 times funnier than Conan.

Did you notice how guests on the Wanda Sykes show are funnier than on other shows? It isn't because she is giving them booze. She is setting up the conversation to be funny.

If FOX wants a late night talk show, put Wanda Sykes on first, then Conan later.

Now, I didn't say her show wasn't funny. I laughed more last night than I have in the last probably dozen SNL shows.

I just don't think that she's the style Fox's audience would like personally. Maybe she will be Conan's lead-in show. Rumors have it that CBS is canning "The Old Adventures of New Christine" anyway, which could lead to an 11PM Wanda Sykes show 5x a week or something.

That's a damn lie, why do you believe what Leno told you when it's in direct contradiction to what he himself has said in the past? When Leno signed his last 5 year contract in 2004 for $100M, it was already a few months AFTER the announcement was made that Conan would take over in 2009. He was going to be out of his contract after that. He signed a NEW contract, SPECIFICALLY for the 10pm show, AFTER that. He could have WALKED as of December of 2009 and gone wherever he wanted, but he agreed to do this 10pm show. His show failed, and NBC fired him. He was under no obligation to go back to 11:30, his contract was for 10pm. They had to pay him or buy him out. He got a NEW contract to go back to the Tonight Show, and he happily signed it because he's a backstabbing weasel, and he has been for decades. David Letterman, Howard Stern, and now Conan O'Brien all agree. He's left an all-star team of broadcasters in his wake, none of whom he can match in raw talent.

...I never said he wasn't. Both will need to be replaced soon, Letterman has already been rumored to be ready to step down. The point remains, who does NBC view as a viable replacement. A complete nobody? That has to go up against Conan on another network. They've shot themselves in the foot chasing a couple more years of ratings at best, and not thinking about the long term.
