I have 3 games (Concordia, Imperial Steam, Hansa Teutonica) that have some overlap with Catan but don't have the same issues.
I am actually one of the people that played it back when it was newer. I remember it got people playing board games who weren't really into Monopoly, Clue, etc. But now there's just too much to choose from. I have never owned Catan and not many people consider it a must-own anymore.
The interesting thing is that the other 3 games on sale here ARE widely considered must-owns. Catan is everywhere because it's the OG Euro game import from 20 years ago. Splendor, Azul, and Ticket to Ride are everywhere because they are truly great games with broad appeal. Azul in particular is a masterpiece.

The biggest issue that I have with Catan isn't that it's luck-based. It is, but so are a number of other games that I really like. The luck factor can be annoying, but it's not the biggest issue. Our group got sick of it because the game inevitably got into dealmaking - bribing people to not put the robber on you, paying others to hold onto cards for you to get under the limit, trying to convince everyone that someone else was the biggest threat or about to get longest road, etc. In other words, the game became more about your ability to convince people to do things for you than it did about strategy.
Catan does serve the role of being most people's first introduction to board games beyond Monopoly, Clue, etc. It was for me, but I try to avoid playing it now. Prefer the other 3 games listed here. Wingspan is also great cuz it's easy to teach and is engaging for non-gamers, yet more serious players can still enjoy it. We also love 7 Wonders as it's easy to learn even for non-gamers, still fun for gamers, and can scale to the number of players available.

My family still loves Catan, but I'd much rather play Bohnanza instead as a similar building and trading game that I find way more fun.
Bohnanza incentives trading, since that lets you build out of turn, so you're trading whenever you can. In Bohnanza you're building every turn, you're trading every turn, you're always doing things - so it completely avoids the issue in Catan where you could have a lot of turns where you're just rolling dice and doing nothing.
