I bought this about 5 months ago and read the following reddit post by discgolf_foreva which seems to be accurate: You can tell which remote you'll get without opening the box. There's a sticker on the outside of the box by the UPC code. If it reads 2405A-2408A then the remote isn't backlit. If it's 2409 or up then it's backlit. 24 is the year and the second 2 numbers are week of production.

Not sure why they changed the name of this.. it was called the Onn 4K Pro, but to help you decide the differences;

Onn 4K Pro is cheaper
Onn 4K Pro has a USB port for storage or other USB accessory
Onn has Wifi 6; Google has WIfi 5.
Google has a gigabit ethernet port; Onn has 100Mbps
Onn has always-on voice commands (you can say "Hey Google" without using the remote and use it like a Google Assistant); Google doesn't (you have to trigger with the remote)
Google has Matter and Thread built-in so you can control smart devices that support Matter and Thread; Onn doesn't.
Both have a way to find your remote
Onn 4K Pro has a backlit remote
Unless they bring this to non-Google devices, the Google devices have built-in Google Home controls
There may be some differences in audio codec support, but others can chime in on that.

adding my 2cents since i just got this few days ago so i did some testing for anyone on the fence.

99% of my media consumption is streaming anime from my plex library on my DS920 NAS, mostly with .ASS subtitles and my LG c3 and samsung s90c cannot direct play .ASS subtitles, neither could my old roku nor 2nd gen firetv 4k. it would transcode and buffer and gets pretty annoying. This ONN box plays my HEVC anime with .ASS subtitles no problem. tested with AV1, OPUS, HDR and various encodes, all direct plays with no buffering. In the few days i had it, the UI did crash on me once and i had to unplug the power and plug it back in though, other than that its been great.

The old android TV version supports NTFS external storage, making these a great media player. Google TV doesn't natively support it now.

how does this compare to a Nvidia Shield?
Overall the Shield is obviously a more capable product, but...

I bought the cheaper version of this ($20 Onn 4k streamer) because, unlike my Nvidia Shield TV, it supports 4k HDR Youtube playback. The Shield lacks the necessary AV1 codec using VP 9.x encoding to get HDR playback from Youtube.

any reason to get this over a smart TV with built-in Google TV?
My Google TV gets awfully slow if I don't unplug the TV to do a power cycle refresh after a while. The reviews I have seen on this, hopefully will be much better at running.

Just bought the regular 4k few days ago and have been debating to get this one instead for the included remote finder. Thank you!
More reasons other than that..just saying.

ATV4k for $99 or less if you have a family using it - kids, wife, grandparents whatever. Just works. Easy.

Let it be known that even though it has an ethernet connection, it's only 10/100. The wifi is 10x faster in my home. 600+ mbs wifi vs 60mbps ethernet.

So the ethernet is pretty damn pathetic. However I believe you can utilize a $10 usb ethernet adapter for 1000 (gigabit) connection
Yes, everything you said is correct but also note that likely no way you will utilize anything close to full 100mb speed for streaming.

These also work with TailScale for an exit node/VPN. https://www.reddit.com/r/Tailscale/s/AUTX7t0KlZ

Can plug this into any HDMI TV and you can always upgrade to a new streaming box when you feel like it without buying a new TV.

First of all, you will be buying a TV with some type of smart OS buit in so that's not a factor so don't buy for that feature. This will have far better hardware and run much smoother on any TV then built-in smarts.

This or the new Google TV 4K streamer?I guess $35 (Onn) vs $100 (GTV Streamer) tips the scale in favor of this one, but curious to know if you take price out of the equation is the GTV Stream really much better?I don't want to buy an nVidia shield, but if the latter is much better I would rather wait for a deal on that and "chug along" with the old and laggy Chromecast Google TV dongle I have right now.

Not understanding what you mean by "old android TV version". Can you clarify? Is this onn model considered as an "old android TV version" that supports NTFS external USB storage?
