It was set up pretty well right out of the box. I now have Labella Deep Talkin' flatwound strings on mine. Sounds great!

The bass looks OK. It's not flashy by any means. The body has tiny indentations and imperfections throughout it. The finish on the body is super thin. Someone else pointed out that you can still see the wood grain, and I have to agree to a certain extent. You can't expect much on the looks for the price though.
The neck is very smooth and feels good while playing. However, the fret ends could use a good filing, as some of them are still sharp and extend out just by a tiny bit - enough for your fingers to feel it. Other than that, the neck is fine.
The volume and tone knobs on these bass guitars are stacked on top of each other. The tone knob wraps around the volume knob. On the bass that I received, the 2nd volume/tone knob grinds against each other and gets stuck - to the point where you can't control the 2 independently.
Out of the box, the bass needed a setup. Which is to be expected. I saw a ton of reviews that said the bass played perfectly out of the box. Upon unboxing mine, I found that the E and D strings had almost perfect intonation. The A and D strings however, were off by quite a bit. Rolling back the string saddle fixed that the D string. But the A string just seems to become more sharp the more I travel up the neck. I also have a very noticeable buzz on a good bit of the frets for each string until I get past the 4th-6th fret. I'm sure this could be fixed with a truss rod adjustment and saddle adjustment, but I haven't looked too much into it yet.
The edges of the pickups are very sharp and pointy. I found myself hitting the picks up with my hands/arms and they will poke the mess out of you. I imagine taking some light sandpaper to the edges of this would be a quick fix.
The bass seems to stay in tune well, and the tuning heads seem to be of good quality.
The bass sounds good and you really can get quite a bit of tones from the active pickups that are present. With the roll of the knobs, it quickly becomes big and dull, or sharp and punchy.
Although I only paid $170 after tax and shipping, I am returning this bass. I likely had high expectations after reading so many positive reviews, but I'd rather spend a little more to get a bass without these issues. I do believe this would be a great beginner bass, though!
