The first bike arrived damaged and unusable. They refused to honor their return policy, insisting that I either repair it myself (they sent me a link to a YouTube video wtf) or bring it to a mechanic at my own risk. Suffice to say, I opened a credit card dispute and am still fighting to retain my credit.
The second bike hadn't been shipped when the issues with the first began, so I requested a cancellation, which they confirmed. Then they shipped it anyway. I refused the delivery. It arrived at their facility 2 weeks ago and I still haven't received a refund. Another dispute was opened and I'm having to deal with that now.
Edit: just checked and the first dispute was finally resolved in my favor just this morning. Now on to the second dispute…
I ordered one of the Able bikes in the last deal. About three weeks went by between the time of the order and when I realized I hadn't received the bike. Meanwhile, they spammed the heck out of my email account with other "promotions". I emailed the general customer service email address demanding they provide me an update. No response. About another week goes by and I get a "your order shipped" email notification. Great! Fantastic! Except that a few hours after receiving that email, I got a retraction saying they had made a mistake and my order hadn't shipped.
I emailed them to demand cancellation of the order based on the long wait and my spidey senses telling me something was off. I actually got a response within a few hours that acknowledged my request and told me the order would be cancelled. Guess what? The next day, Mendham shipped the bike. Geez. When I got the shipment notification, I started checking the tracking and noticed it took them more than a day to actually ship the bike (they just issued tracking by creating a shipping label). In the interim, I again emailed them about cancellation and warned them not to ship. No response. The bike arrived and box and interior parts were beat to hell. I put in a dispute with my credit card company, who immediately issued a confirmation of successful dispute, a sign they know what Mendham is up to. I tried several more times to demand they take the bike back. They finally responded on the third email and asked for a huge list of items. I took the bike to a charity that fixes up bikes and gives to kids in need. I'll just rely on my CC underwriter.
Please save yourself from the same headaches and from having to write an equally painful testimonial on SD by just skipping this "deal". It's not a deal and if you research online, you find the bikes are junk anyways.

I got my wife one of the Kent hub drive 250w and even though that doesn't have much power it works well around the neighborhood. My casual understanding is the mid drive should work even better.

As far as the battery, I won't be sourcing an OEM replacement unless they are blowing them out dirt cheap. It's likely you can have the OEM battery rebuilt with better cells if needed - once the original battery sags - which should be years from now.
If you're looking for greater range, you should be able to wire in a second battery in parallel to supplement the existing battery. These M400s should be simple two wire power systems allowing you to plug in any battery matching the OEM specs of 36v. Heck I'll probably mount up an adapter for a Ryobi 40v (36v nominal) battery since I have that handy. The Ryobi's are nice as they contain their own BMS and it's hard to kill them.
But this being a mid drive, you can extend your range simply by reducing the PAS level and contributing more of own power - that's always the cheapest fix!
If you wanted, you could convert the whole system to 48v by replacing the controller with the 48v version and a matching battery. Not sure that's needed in this style of bike tho.
Has anyone received their bike already? If so, can you tell us whether the connector on the cable going into display is round or triangular shaped? If round, it is likely that the power systems can be re-programmed and customized using Bafang utilities.
Fingers crossed that they actually deliver these bikes. If so, I can make a little comparison with the Yamaha e-bikes we also bought on that deal.

But there's really no sense in worrying about it now as you should get years of service out of the original pack anyway. And within the lifespan of the original pack it is likely that vendors and even battery tech could change. I'm still running on one pack that is more than 9 years old. And in that time cells have become much more robust and higher capacity. We may even be replacing these lithium ion packs with Lifepo4 or even sodium batteries.

My parents just ordered a pair of the Haven Power Wave 27.5 mid-drives from Mendham. They're $899 each before 25% coupon, so $675 after the discount. I'm really looking forward to checking those out.

Update, I would reconsider purchasing this bike. The two that my parents ordered arrived today I went over to check them out. Both of them could not be assembled due to major issues with the forks. One was completely welded crooked where the disc brake mount on the fork completely interfered with the rotor. The other bike had some caliper mount alignment issues that could be solved with some shims between the hub and the rotor, but the fork legs were spaced nearly 3/4" too narrow (81mm spacing as opposed to 100mm). Additionally, the description on the website says the batteries are UL tested, but that is not true. There are no UL markings anywhere on the bike or battery. With all the lithium battery fires, I would be a bit weary about these bikes. My dad is likely going to send them back. I hope they will provide him return labels without charging. The boxes were in rough shape when they arrived, too. Maybe you'll have better luck, but I wouldn't expect much. Usually, if something seems like too good of a deal, it probably is.

I just want them to ship my bike I ordered about 2 weeks ago.
Not sure what that all amounts to but if I had to guess these Haven bikes are a brand that never took off by the same owner/investor and now they are clearing them out. All a guess though, I have no inside knowledge just some Googling.
I'll have to wait and see if I get something with good quality control and lucky shipping or a headache.

Mendham is being cagey in their description regarding UL status. They state "Passed UL Testing" in their product specs - not that it is UL certified. That could mean that they themselves conducted testing that they think meets the UL criteria. It costs extra money to get an official UL certification of course.
Another sketchy thing that some Chinese sellers are doing is claiming a battery as UL listed when just the cells are listed and not the assembled battery itself. So Samsung may have paid to have their cell certified but the pack builder didn't pay get their assembled battery certified.
As for why they're dumping these bikes, who knows for sure… but I suspect these are excess builds from the post covid production surge that got built before demand dropped and left most builders with excess product.
Some other thoughts (highly speculative):
They may not be officially UL certified which is required in certain jurisdictions.
The drive system is several generations back from Bafang's current models. This is also built to a weird spec. It is configured with a class 1 speed limit of 20mph when most city bikes are now configured as class 3 at 28mph. That limits their appeal in the US market.
And because the M400 drive system is older, it may allow user customizations that run afoul of EU and other country's regulations. Bafang has locked down their newer generations of motors to prevent user changes in order to comply with newer regs. So these M400 systems may have limits on where they can be sold. They may meet the EU spec on speed limits but not meet current EU regs for other reasons.
But like I said, this is a lot of speculation on my part…
I'm fully prepared to go the credit card chargeback route if Mendham doesn't deliver, or if they deliver damaged, unusable, or out-of-spec bikes, and they refuse to make things right. I'm going into this deal with eyes wide open and I'm prepared to be disappointed!
