To be able to play it decently. Otherwise after lv56+ you're stuck with limited inventory which
will make the game almost unplayable.
This is a grinding-focused game, but it was some of the most fun while grinding I've had due to the key combo skills. Also, it speeds you to the end game as quickly as a ~6 hours if you push so you don't feel like you're way behind. There are afk/idle mechanics to some "professions", and the game rewards you for letting it run 24/7.
There are three main "end games" to choose from: life skilling (PVE), PVE combat, and PVP. You can do any/all of these, but some end game gear will make you choose in order to min/max.
Some say you'll need to spend money on the game, but you can definitely get away with F2P, with giving up some QoL aspects in the short-term (ex: limited character slots, inventory slots, pets that increase drop rates). I'd say after about 3 months-ish you'll have most of those QoL features because there are A LOT of giveaways/Twitch drops/events.
Note: A portion of the $-buyable items are CHARACTER-specific and non-refundable once redeemed. I'd recommend hitting up a "choose your class" video playlist on YouTube to tell what class looks the most fun to you. It'll also help you avoid the high APM classes
Overall, if you like this type of game, and are looking for that next MMO addiction, you can't beat this price!

My main is maxed out at 192 slots and 1500 weight after playing the game for a year.
They have reduced the weight of items and made items stack after multiple patches, so many of these concerns have also improved.
You can play the game pretty comprehensively for free and if you are on top of events, coupons and other bonuses you can get pretty far in without spending a dime.
Biggest cash shop item is the tent, it allows you to instantly repair and get buffs anywhere, although there is a free version which is considerable more work.

I PvE/Lifeskill mostly and have over 30k hours in the game now. The games combat system is the best in the industry for combat systems. While I say this. It is more action adventure combat(Devil May Cry, God of War) and not WoW like/Path of Exile like. There are different ways to play the game even grind in it, you can use a controller, you can use hotkeys and you can just use the combo system(This is what I use) The combo system is technically the same for every character, but due to the moves being different for every class the way you perform the combos vary class to class sometimes greatly.
Just like any MMO, there are easy to difficult classes to learn, Personal Favorite for me is Woosa/Sage. This game also does not punish you for making more than one high level character, as the game does not depend as much on your level, so the soft cap is level 60/61. The gearing system is pretty straight forward too. You get your season character as a new player, level them up and get their gear maxed, then you trade that gear to boss gear, and then to end game gear. The accessories you wear/crystal presets you use can decide your playstyle more so in the game and is what varies for people for PvE.
Lifeskilling, this is probably what chill people love the most. There are a crazy number of things you can do for lifeskilling, and plenty of crazy systems to learn and excel spreadsheets you can view if you want. Horse breeding/racing, turning your horses into a pegasus or a horse that can run on water, or a mount that can multiple itself so that 6 people can get on it total. Sailing, and different branches, either for monster hunting/PvP or for Bartering/Fishing, Alchemy, cooking, hunting, trading(not the same as bartering) farming, gathering and processing. There are in game guides but also the community is large and makes guides for all this too.
The developers have been working on doing QoL on the game. As previously mentioned inventory slots aren't hard to obtain. You get them free and most items stack now, every city has storage which you can expand in the game, and you can expand the storage using "Loyalty" points just by logging in which is often given away in large chunks too.
Now I will add some truth that you don't have to spend money, but spending money on certain things do make your life easier, but you honestly won't know until you know you like the game, or even played for years.
"Premium Tent" vs gathering and making your own every 7 days. The Premium tent is useful mostly to repair your gear while grinding or life skilling. This is the only item you really need in the game to spend money on, and it goes on sale often enough. I went 7 years without buying it myself. You can build one too, but it expires overtime and isn't as good as a premium one. The premium tent also has some useful buffs that you exchange silver for.
My only recommendation if you try the game is to try different classes. Don't just play "Girl" or "Boy" classes. Find the one you like and you will probably enjoy playing the game off and on.
After playing BDO for 10 years I on average have spent less than $1 a month playing it, including purchasing the game when it came out.
Sidenote: Current event is giving out "Premium" outfits you can collect but don't have to open until you know which class you will be playing. EVERYONE gets these outfits. The downside being it's one of those daily login things.
Hope to see some of you in the game. Take care!
