I got the M4 Pro a month ago but I would personally go for M3 Pro for this price, $450 is a big difference(comes to additional ~26.5% in savings). I use the M3 Pro version for work and haven't really noticed any difference. Most of the performance upgrades are only noticable in certain tasks(e.g. video editing, running LLM). You would know by heart if you need those upgrades.

On one hand, I wouldn't really say upgrading to the same "tier" is worth $250 or $700...but on the other hand, the newer ones are better?

If it matters, I completely disregarded the M3 Pro since it has lower bandwidth than older M1/M2 Pro and performs worse/same as them in certain memory bound tasks. But you can't disregard $450 in difference either :/
LLM and Video/Music editing will benefit from this M4 Pro - if we are just sticking to the Pro line.
As for the M1 Pro, I sold mine instead of doing a trade-in, to get more money back. After having the M4 Pro for a month, it has been so much better than the M1 Pro - not saying that it is a slouch, but the difference depending on usage is a lot. No difference in web browsing or opening most apps, for those on the fence.

I edit small clips on Topaz Video AI, on an M1 Pro it took 4m9s. On the M4 Pro, the same clip took 2m48s, this adds up.
Jumping from an M3 Pro to an M4 Pro, isn't as substantial, but from an M1 Pro it is. Also plenty of testing videos online.

So I bought the M3 Pro deal yesterday, Best Buy price matched the $1,250 Costco price. At a $500 discount versus the previous best M4 Pro price, that was a great deal.

Now Best Buy has the M4 Pro at $1700 - and for $1,623 for Excellent Open Box in Silver (my preferred color anyway).

Paypal has 5% reward on Best Buy right now, which nets another $81 back. Effectively $1,542.

The decision between the two is much tougher at $290 difference than when it was $500 difference. The M4 Pro is 24GB RAM vs. 18GB. Single core speeds are 20% faster, the battery efficiency is better, and the screen is brighter. I think I'm going to end up with the M4 Pro open box, $1,622 less any reward is an incredible price.

Most cash back will exclude Apple products so don't expect anything to payout. PayPal rewards has 5% back (if you pay through PayPal) and is maybe a little more likely to payout though I could not find any concrete reports one way or the other if they do or do not payout on Apple products.

How does it compare to the base version of 14" M1 Max?

Having that rn (32GB RAM, base M1 max with nerfed GPU), and 24FB RAM will be just enough for me.
