Is there any benefit to these over fire sticks, chrome casts or just your already smart tv apps?

Yes, you can not side load anything to Roku.

That's why Roku is dead to me.

I switched from fire tv to roku because they are significantly faster and more reliable. Downside is that you can't sideload apps

What other apps are you trying to load that don't work? You have me curious now. As long as it loads basic streaming media apps and Plex I'm good.

When using firetv, you can sideload apps and use a service like real debrid to stream shows and movies from lots of sources across the world (like torrenting in a way). But all standard apps from the app store can be downloaded without issue, just can't sideload apps that aren't on the app store with Roku.
