C'mon that was an obvious price error. I was disappointed too but you knew there was a chance it would get revoked.

I'm guessing this is the same guy who has posted about this in every Microsoft thread I've seen since it happened. Obvious pricing mistake and he is still holding a grudge. Pathetic.

That case was, but keep in mind that you don't really own any digital purchase you make. It is just an open-ended rental and if that platform loses the rights to stream it, you lose your purchase.

Forgive an old guy asking what may be obvious questions to many of you: You don't get an actual physical version of these, just (basically) permission to stream them? So, if the vendor (Microsoft?) loses the rights, so do you?

I'm watching Breaking Bad on Netflix right now (AMAZING!!!) but I would like to watch Justified. I'm assuming that this is just for the initial run of Justified, not any of the follow-up series. The link says 78 episodes through 6 seasons.

I don't have any gaming platform/hardware although I do use a PC running Windows. Can I take advantage of this? If so, how would I watch?

No problem at all! You're correct that with digital purchases like this, you don't get a physical copy of the content. Instead, you essentially gain the rights to stream it. If the vendor (like Microsoft) loses the rights to stream the content, you MAY lose access to it, but for the most part it stays in your library, but delisted in their store. This is how it's worked with other vendors in the past, no idea how Microsoft deals with it.
Regarding Justified, the 78 episodes across 6 seasons should be the full series, but you're right that this would not include any follow-up series.
Since you use a Windows PC, you can absolutely take advantage of this. You can stream the content directly from the Microsoft Store or use the Movies & TV app on your PC to access the purchased shows. Simply log into your Microsoft account, and you should be able to watch it from there.

Fellow long-timer here. I try to stick to buying movies and TV shows through Apple for this reason. Haven't lost access to anything in nearly 20 years. I figure if Apple customers start losing access to digital purchases it'll be because the end times have come for the digital streaming business model and we'll all have moved on to something else anyway.

Thank you very much for your answer. I had no idea that the "Movies & TV app" even existed!!!

If a show is "delisted," it will (probably) stay active for me to watch, as far as you know? (I know there are no guarantees in life and especially online...)

I understand but physical copies are becoming rarer and rarer. I have an entire bookshelf filled with DVDs and Blu Rays. Tarantino? Got 'em all! Kubrick? Samesies! Several other directors and actors are complete, too. Kinda like the man said, "Live it or live with it!"

Thanks for your response.

From what I understand, once you purchase it, the content stays in your account. You just need to go to your library to watch it, instead of searching for it in the store. However, if a vendor decides to revoke your license in the future, they technically have the right to do so. I haven't seen this happen with any major vendors, but as you mentioned, there are no guarantees.

I'm of similar thought.

  1. Physical first, for beloved films/series.
  2. Streaming subscriptions (to watch casually, check things outs etc)
  3. I buy digitally if cheap and 4k or beloved series with rewatchability and on Apple (they have the best quality, streaming wise vs others)
  4. I have my NAS set up as a backup of most of my physical stuff. Overkill, but sometimes comes in handy when I'm extremely lazy.
