My wifes Q45's are also a valid comparison as they are wireless/BT and in the $150 range so I have 3 similar cost and style to compare soon.
Maybe they just need broken in. We have an old LG G8 with the high end DAC. I'll try that. But if this is the best (or top 3) NC can on the market, it doesn't compare to dedicated non NC cans in the same price range.
Update... I ran the Sony's wired into my Pioneer SX1080 receiver and wow, that made all the difference. The Sennheisers still sounded better, but its absolutely the headphone amp. Wireless will never sound as good as wired if you have a good amp.

My initial impression is they are GREAT and the dongle does exactly what I had hoped, no latency so its fine to watch video or play games with and no BT pairing hassles to deal with.
They work great with my Steam Deck, and my Phone/Tablet so far.
The XM4 are supposed to be here tomorrow, so I'll get some time in with them soon.
I dont think I will make a huge deal about reviewing them, but I'll atleast probably put some kind of personal reveiw up on YouTube incase anyone happens to be searching for similar answers/advice.

I just dont have the time to take YT as a serious hobby when I make pennies from it vs the big guys and still have my regular job and family duties to take care of.
I have not listened to the Q45's yet and they will be kind of a bonus extra since they are technically cheaper than these two.
The N9's are winning in basically everything except two things that are more subjective.
The N9's have a much better app for changing the settings, a better app experience overall, and no hassles (I still cant seem to get signed into the Sony app for some reason throws me an error and goes in a loop)
The N9's sound better, they have equal bass, but retain the clarity of the mids and highs where the XM4's really start to fall.
I am OK with a v-shaped EQ and knew the XM4's are supposed to be scooped in the mids, but its not an amplitude issue like a scooped EQ, its a clarity issue.
I don't notice this as much with electronic music, but rock and such with a big mix of instruments across the range you can really hear a difference.
I much prefer the case for the N9's just turn flat and pack, fast and easy vs the fold and finagle of the Sony case, and of course that fold also has lead to some broken XM4's over time. Its only like 1" bigger of a case, I cant see any bag that the sony would fit in that the AKG would not.
I much prefer the multiple really nice physical buttons on the N9 to the limited touch of the XM4. I especially like the power switch, and then of course the built in hidden dongle.
The dongle was the main selling point for me, I have tested it with my phone, my steam deck, and my tablet so far and all 3 just work plug and play.
No BT pairing, no audio latency issues, etc. So you can have high quality audio with zero latency vs the BT mode for the AKG like many other devices I have having a separate video mode vs audio mode.
The AKG app (same as my JVC earbuds I think) has a toggle between high fidelity audio mode for music, vs video mod where the codec is changed to one that favors latency over quality so that the video and audio will be in sync (also needed for gaming).
The two subjective things are looks and comfort.
I think the XM4's look better, and I think they are VERY slightly more comfortable.
But if I am wearing headphones I am not wearing them for fashion and so far I have not had any comfort issues with either, its just that I can feel a very slight pressure on my left ear with both of them, but the XM4s are very slightly less pressure.
I have used the ANC on both, but not really tested it, usually I am listening so loud ANC doesn't matter lol.
I have not tested battery life yet because I will always charge them before it runs out on both.
The sony headphones are extremely popular so of course they will have more users, be more popular, etc and that is why I often buy multiple things to test so I can be a voice of reason in a market of people that usually only buy from advertisements and word of mouth from others but I knew AKG makes GREAT stuff as I have other wired AKG headphones and they definitely lived up the expectations I had for them.
I am considering buying earpad covers for the XM4 and making them for more workout scenarios like taking a walk or maybe the gym and using the N9 for more of my media headphones when sitting around.
Though honestly while I am going to try, I will probably keep using earbuds for anything athletic.
