Typical home was usually around $1.5k. That's how much I paid in 2021. They basically drill a big hole into your concrete floor, remove some dirt around it, and then run a large diameter PVC pipe to the outside (in my case through all levels up out the roof) and install a motor either in the attic (better for longevity) or outside. And they seal gaps, cracks etc where it's easily accessible, in my case only on the equipment room where they drilled the hole. Not really that difficult, but a lot of work. The two people who installed it do it every day, and it still took them 6 hours. I did end up needing a stronger motor due to some unexpected foundation blocking half my basement, as the regular motor didn't help enough. But because I didn't want another system on the other half of the house I opted for a stronger motor instead. Downside is it is significantly louder (I installed a bunch of fiberglass matts around it in the attic to reduce the noise), and it uses significantly more power. But it did bring the levels down to acceptable levels.

That being said, I would not recommend doing this yourself. The cost is very reasonable in my opinion. Plus they should guarantee their work and guarantee a certain level. In my case that meant they offered me that second system or stronger motor at no extra charge.
I have one of these in my basement and find it useful. One thing to consider with radon is it's weight relative to air. It's about 7.5 times the weight of air. For reference, propane is only 1.5X. Something to think about when ventilating and for the placement of this detector.
Radon comes from the earth under the house regardless of when the house was built.

I'd start with a $15 mail-in kit and go from there.

I, and all my neighbors, have full remediation systems, so I bought this instead of doing annual $15 tests to make sure the kids are safe playing in the finished basement.

I have this Airthings radon detector and the Ecosense RD200 RadonEye Home Radon Detector. The RadonEye is much better; it was on sale for about $130 at Amazon a few weeks ago.

It works great and provides three readings (long term average, 7-day and 1-day averages). It would have been better if it comes with bluetooth.

Anything under 2 pCi/L is considered normal/background. I think that's almost ambient outdoor reading levels. Anything over 4 is considered actionable. I have this device in the basement where I got my highest readings before putting in a radon exhaust fan. Works just fine and has been for 3 years now.

How is this compared to professional radon testing?

Per the EPA, you should take action if it exceeds 4pCi/L

This is about as low as I have seen. Paid $99 for mine 3 years ago.
