Typical home was usually around $1.5k. That's how much I paid in 2021. They basically drill a big hole into your concrete floor, remove some dirt around it, and then run a large diameter PVC pipe to the outside (in my case through all levels up out the roof) and install a motor either in the attic (better for longevity) or outside. And they seal gaps, cracks etc where it's easily accessible, in my case only on the equipment room where they drilled the hole. Not really that difficult, but a lot of work. The two people who installed it do it every day, and it still took them 6 hours. I did end up needing a stronger motor due to some unexpected foundation blocking half my basement, as the regular motor didn't help enough. But because I didn't want another system on the other half of the house I opted for a stronger motor instead. Downside is it is significantly louder (I installed a bunch of fiberglass matts around it in the attic to reduce the noise), and it uses significantly more power. But it did bring the levels down to acceptable levels.

That being said, I would not recommend doing this yourself. The cost is very reasonable in my opinion. Plus they should guarantee their work and guarantee a certain level. In my case that meant they offered me that second system or stronger motor at no extra charge.

I have one of these in my basement and find it useful. One thing to consider with radon is it's weight relative to air. It's about 7.5 times the weight of air. For reference, propane is only 1.5X. Something to think about when ventilating and for the placement of this detector.

Radon comes from the earth under the house regardless of when the house was built.

I'd start with a $15 mail-in kit and go from there.

I, and all my neighbors, have full remediation systems, so I bought this instead of doing annual $15 tests to make sure the kids are safe playing in the finished basement.

How is this compared to professional radon testing?
Relatively accurate.

Mine was reading between 4 and 7 before I had my Radon mitigation done.

After they did the mitigation, they left their professional one at my house for a few days to gather data. When they collected it a few days later, the reading was showing 4.5 immediately after installing the mitigation, and it dropped to about 1 over the next few days. So I'd say this thing was relatively accurate when compared to the professional models that are in use by the pros.

This is like 1/10th the cost to get a mitigation system installed just do it and not have to worry about
Even for newer homes built in 2020s is it even necessary?

Good product, paid $99 in Jan 2020. The house I bought already had a mitigation system installed, I bought this to ensure it was doing a good enough job. My readings have been consistent throughout the usage period, generally less than 0.4, so atta boy mitigation system.

I let my people borrow it, and the readings do actually change when relocated, so it seems to be measuring something and not just giving you random numbers, lol.

So buy this, it's cheap peace of mind, and once you get your readings you can lend it out as a favor to everyone you care about, giving them peace of mind, or alerting them to a legit danger, but one that can be abated.

I see no lose here, if you have the money.

Does it require calibration regularly?

I think a "tighter built" new home would potentially have more radon issues no? Older homes with less insulation and more air leaks could vent better imo. Probably not enough to make it a non-issue though

I got lucky and paid $10 for one of these brand new in the box at a BIN store. I tested it at my home and worked great. Was easy to set up and use, but I knew the levels would not be bad in the area I live in. I sold it on Ebay for $78 and made a profit.

Have had mine for 3 years and still works fine. We had high readings prior to this and put in a system to lower the levels. The radon guy was impressed we had this and spoke highly of it. I would recommend to any homeowner to have this as basic monitor. I 3d printed a stand for sitting this under my TV so I can see the reading every day.
