I just did some quick historical Amazon price looking on Amazon for the 10 and 16 packs of AA and AAA Eneloops on camelcamelcamel. As far as I can see, these 10 packs are the best price for these batteries in years.

Because those 2500mAh batteries were garbage, with an insane self-discharge rate. With NiMH, the higher you go in capacity (at the same size), the higher the self-discharge rate and the lower the overall lifespan. If you want high capacity, the Eneloop Pros are 2600mAh, but they won't hold up as well as these.

People put way too much stock in the whole "made in Japan" thing. Not all batteries made in Japan are good, nor are all batteries made in China bad.

You are correct that the Energizer NiMH are usually made in Japan, however they are definitely not rebranded Eneloops. They have different physical and electrical characteristics. Strangely, there's a huge difference between the 2000mAh and 2300mAh version. The 2300mAh version are garbage, while the 2000mAh seem fairly decent.

I know people often bring up the supposedly rebranded Eneloops, such as the IKEA Ladda or Watson MX/CX but I'm not convinced they're as good as genuine Eneloops. The ones I've tested have been quite inconsistent, unlike real Eneloops, which have all performed virtually identically. Also, a site that did long term testing had rebranded Eneloops at the bottom of the chart, while the genuine ones did quite well.

They havent been that low in several years. Ive had deal alerts setup for 2 years. This is about as cheap as Ive seen the last 1+ years. Even checking Keepa and CamelX3 show this.
As an alternative, the Ikea Laddas are supposedly rebadged Eneloop Pros at well under $2/battery. Ive been running those and have been happy with the results.

Yeah, skip these and get the LADDA cells from IKEA.
Uh, why? Eneloops are arguably better (particularly from a low self discharge standpoint). They're basically the same price per battery, and not everyone has an Ikea nearby.

How do you even tell if it is counterfeit or not?

Any charger is fine. My go-to charger is a BT-3100, but I'm not sure if they make them anymore. I wanted something that charges C size batteries, and various sized lithium ion. Having a refresh mode is helpful too, as batteries can often be salvaged by a charger with this feature.

If I were buying a charger now, I'd probably get this, though I have no experience with it

Any device that allows batteries to run down very low before quitting will damage rechargeable batteries, which unfortunately is nearly everything. The problem is made worse when you've got unbalanced batteries, so that one will run flat while others still have good voltage.

Batteries can usually be recovered by forcing them to recharge, then running the refresh mode which will charge and discharge them until capacity stops improving between cycles.

For what it is worth, I have Eneloops from the Xbox 360 days (15-18 years old probably) that still hold a charge just fine.

I've read about long long times, but they just don't last for me. Who knows!

Powerowl was the top tested and suggested battery from Project Farm but seems like this thread is just an Eneloop circle jerk.
Yep, a jerk for sure.

I also have a Yale smart lock that has a WiFi module, in the battery cover it says not to use rechargeable batteries. I wonder if that's the reason why they only want people to use regular ones.

Those were disposable lithium cells, and they were a top value not absolute performance.

These are rechargeable nimh.

For those wanting rechargeable called for voltage dependent applications, possibly in cold weather, you need voltage regulated lithium AAs, like Tenevolt AAs.

FYI. My Panasonic AA Eneloop batteries lasted about one hundred recharge cycles for same usage. Other brands of similar price I have have lasted more cycles.

Yes, $2 PER Battery for AA is/was the "Great Deal" on Eneloops in the past.
Recently, the AAA batteries were on sale in the $2 range.

This price point is just a good price...it's NOT a SlickDeals Price.

As others have stated, it's been a while since it was at the $2 per battery price point.
The lowest I paid so far is $2.14 per Eneloop AA battery (pack of 16) on Feb 19, 2019. Considering inflation, upcoming federal sales tax (aka "tarriffs") I think this is a great price. If you have an Ikea close by, the LADDA AA are $2.50 each currently, or $0.03 less. Although I don't know if they still are just rebranded Japanese Eneloops.
