Do yourself a favor and get a USB extension cable at the same time. This unit often has interference issues that a extension can fix.

Zigbee is a communication protocol for low-power usage sensors - door opening, motion/occupancy, temperature, leak detection, etc.

This dongle would be used with a PC or Raspberry Pi acting as a server for a home automation software such as Home Assistant.

I also have one of their buttons on my bedside table - single press toggles first floor lights on/off, double press toggles second floor lights on/off, long press toggles every light in the house on/off.

The nice part is you don't need Aqara's proprietary hub - the Sonoff dongle will recognize the Aqara devices locally.

Want to mention that, you can't use ZHA and Z2M at the same time in Home Assistant as both try to use the same adapter. Better of using Z2M than ZHA. I know, it is also mentioned in the OP

my SmartThings crapped out and I barely survived getting it back up, so I know I'm on borrowed time. I'd like to save some wave devices, is there a wave-zigbee combo dongle out there? I think I saw nortek from old posts but it is not available anymore - any recommendations?

Yep, yep that was my reasoning behind my post previously in this thread.
IMO I've had good experiences using zigbee and z-wave product and most importantly it doesnt clog up wifi with another ip device... that also may have backdoor vulnerabilities.

To those unfamiliar, there's some zigbee/ zwave security issues out there can can and cannot be mitigated depending on devices but you should always weigh the odds of realistic scenarios given youre situation.

Here's the Nortek device, which I use. Amazon's product listing for it is terrible, so it doesn't come up in searches on Amazon. I only use the Zigbee portion though, and it's been solid, with ~30 devices attached. I have been looking for a Z-Wave device to attach, but nothing has come up yet - suggestions welcome :-)

To be clear you don't need POE, it takes micro USB power + regular ethernet also

I used to run HA in Windows Virtualbox but now run it in Proxmox and it is much more stable. I am not too familiar with Docker. I think for anything virtualized there's just the extra step of passing through the USB to the VM that you can avoid with an ethernet zigbee coordinator instead.
