This is the go-to USB zigbee dongle at a great price, but I highly recommend the SMLIGHT ethernet ones as they are a lot more flexible (can place anywhere with ethernet, no need to USB connect to the device) and also will probably give fewer compatibility issues depending how you use them (e.g., no need to pass through USB to a VM)
Not necessarily more flexible if you don't have a PoE ethernet port at an optimal location.
One of these cheap USB docks can be used to position the Sonoff dongle away from the device that HA is running on, this one is ~4.7', there are other lengths available.

I second this - their window/door sensors are great for Home Assistant automations - along with smart light switches, I use the window/door sensors to automate closet lighting (door opens, lights on, door closes, lights off, door left open, turn off light after 5 minutes), exterior door routines (if exterior door opened between sunset and sunrise, exterior light(s) turn on), attic lighting (open attic hatch, attic lights turn on, close attic hatch, lights turn off), "You've got mail" routine (curbside mailbox door opens, voice assistant announces "You've got mail"), garage lighting (interior door opens to attached garage, garage lights turn on).
Their motion sensors work well too - when I open the door to my unfinished basement, the overhead lights turn on - a motion sensor in the basement turns off the lights if no motion sensed for 10 minutes).
I also have one of their buttons on my bedside table - single press toggles first floor lights on/off, double press toggles second floor lights on/off, long press toggles every light in the house on/off.
The nice part is you don't need Aqara's proprietary hub - the Sonoff dongle will recognize the Aqara devices locally.
Want to mention that, you can't use ZHA and Z2M at the same time in Home Assistant as both try to use the same adapter. Better of using Z2M than ZHA. I know, it is also mentioned in the OP
It boggles my mind why we get comments like this these days when we are a few swipes away from something like Google and simply typing in the word zigbee...
The P version is mainly plug and play. The E version is newer and has more bugs and features that may be more technical to configure.
I have the ZBDongle-P, did some research and learned this dongle cannot be upgraded to support the Thread protocol. the -E version can be updated though. Was thinking about getting the -E version, but i can also get the Home Assistant SkyConnect which is officially supported.

Yep, yep that was my reasoning behind my post previously in this thread.
IMO I've had good experiences using zigbee and z-wave product and most importantly it doesnt clog up wifi with another ip device... that also may have backdoor vulnerabilities.
To those unfamiliar, there's some zigbee/ zwave security issues out there can can and cannot be mitigated depending on devices but you should always weigh the odds of realistic scenarios given youre situation.

Here's the Nortek device, which I use. Amazon's product listing for it is terrible, so it doesn't come up in searches on Amazon. I only use the Zigbee portion though, and it's been solid, with ~30 devices attached. I have been looking for a Z-Wave device to attach, but nothing has come up yet - suggestions welcome :-)

I'm planning on converting an old computer into a server that would run home assistant, would it be difficult getting this dongle to work with HA running in docker? or should i go the other route you mentioned?
I used to run HA in Windows Virtualbox but now run it in Proxmox and it is much more stable. I am not too familiar with Docker. I think for anything virtualized there's just the extra step of passing through the USB to the VM that you can avoid with an ethernet zigbee coordinator instead.
