I'm an owner of the original Kindle Scribe. It's a great piece of hardware, but it's software is sorely sorely sorely lacking. There's basic functionality that you would expect, missing.

So tech problems someone else mentioned put aside for a memont, The first edition Kindle Scribe was a great piece of hardware For someone who just wants a top of the end Kindle.

But for somebody looking for a robust digital note taker / annotator / etc, I highly highly recommend looking at the Scribe's competitors as well.

A lot of negative reviews reporting edge bleeding, blurry pixels, and dark spots. Wonder if the price drop is clearing out inventory before they get fixed ones in. I'm going to wait.

Remarkable - Great for note taking but okay reader. Also, non-Pro model has no backlight.

Kindle - Great for reading but just okay at note taking.

Remarkable supports epub and PDF, you'll need to remove the DRM & convert your Kindle books with an app like Calibre.

I wish there was a meaningful trade-in for Scribe 1.0 (e.g. something around 100-150 extra to replace v1 with v2). I'm not inclined to pay full (or discounted) price for v2 - would rather go the Onyx Boox route or even stay with v1 (which is kind of lackluster).

Remarkable Paper Pro has been great so far and i know I'm not using it anywhere near it's potential
I second remarkable paper pro. Great device. Like the feeling of writing on it. But it might not be fair to compare Scribe to the $600+ remarkable.

Note that there is essentially no hardware difference with the previous model. They just introduced a "new" model to boost up the sales

From the first picture, it looked like they got rid of the bezel, but they color matched it with the actual display to make the screen look better. I noticed all the hardware specs were the same too

Gen 1 Scribe owner.
I was introduced to paper tablet who raved about his Remarkable. I highly recommend doing some soul searching while doing your research. If you want a robust paper tablet, there are far better options out there. If you want one that doubles as a reader where you can take notes and integrates with your existing kindle library, this is not a bad option. One of my favorite features is the ability to email pdfs to myself, sign them, and send them back to the requestor - thus eliminating the need to print, sign, scan, send. I've been satisfied. That said, I look forward to the updates that will mimic Gen 2.

Gen 1 scribe owner also. Havent used it much other than reading. What is the simplest way to do what you said - email pdfs to myself, sign them and send back? That sounds very useful. I also tried a boox and not being an android user, gave up on the interface, as I was frustrated getting anything done. Boox support was not good and the instructions awful. At least scribe's interface while limited is intuitive.

A lot of reviews on Amazon state that the screen on this is worse than 1st gen Scribe. Contrast does seem to be worse with the image being a bit more washed out on this version. Lot of folks have comparison photos. It might be due to first batch issues. The other issue is that multiple folks are claiming that image sharpness is worse. I think that might be due to the grainier screen they have on this version.

As a pro kindle user I discourage people from this advice. The UX on something like this is absolutely critical, as is integration with your other notes & content.

Kindle software is hardly maintained by Amazon. There are still clumsy design patterns & bugs more than a decade after it's launch.

Amazon knows the kindle reader is a high margin status & luxury item for avid readers. The e-ink screen is compelling for that specific application. But as a general note taking and content creation device, I recommend buying an iPad.

Gen 1 owner here. One of my best purchases. It serves its purpose as a distraction free note taking device and an occasional ebook reader remarkably well. My productivity has skyrocketed after consolidating all note taking into this. Software could be better, undoubtedly, I especially miss the ability to sync to different cloud providers.

I realize it might not be for everyone, but it works well for me. Also have an iPad Air M1 to complement this device.

Also stacks with the 20% off trade-in offer, making it effectively 39% off. Had an old Fire Stick laying around that I used for trade-in.
i get $3 off even on a fire s(t)ick purchased 2 years back. amazon values its products pretty cheaply

I see a lot of alternative recommendations to Remarkable, which I have owned (though not the new pro). I just want to throw out there the alternatives from Supernote, which I own and have found to be the superior product in all the e-ink tablet lines. Though reading on the kindle app on a supernote is a bit clunky.
Yeah Supernote is where it's at. That brand new Supernote Manta looks pretty great, might get that for the wife.

'productivity has skyrocketed'

Interesting. Would you mind sharing what you do? Owning an Oasis, I'm not sure if I can justify getting this

Why you cant use Notes app of iPad or Samsung Tab S series? Asking this b/c i m on the fence and am really intrigued with your "productivity skyrocketed" comment!
