I'm an owner of the original Kindle Scribe. It's a great piece of hardware, but it's software is sorely sorely sorely lacking. There's basic functionality that you would expect, missing.

So tech problems someone else mentioned put aside for a memont, The first edition Kindle Scribe was a great piece of hardware For someone who just wants a top of the end Kindle.

But for somebody looking for a robust digital note taker / annotator / etc, I highly highly recommend looking at the Scribe's competitors as well.

A lot of negative reviews reporting edge bleeding, blurry pixels, and dark spots. Wonder if the price drop is clearing out inventory before they get fixed ones in. I'm going to wait.

Remarkable - Great for note taking but okay reader. Also, non-Pro model has no backlight.

Kindle - Great for reading but just okay at note taking.

Remarkable supports epub and PDF, you'll need to remove the DRM & convert your Kindle books with an app like Calibre.

Consider also Boox Go 10.3 - this one seems to strike a balance (great notetaking as well as Kindle app and Android Play Store apps support)
I am testing the Boox now (I received it yesterday) and I found the screen too dark for my not-so-good eyes. I was trying to use it in a slightly dark room yesterday night, and I could hardly see the letters on the screen even with a large system font. Although it has many features, I will probably return it. At least, this Kindle Scribe has front screen lights.

I am as big an iPad fan as you will find starting with the first one and I buy the latest 13" Pro every time one comes out. My current model is the 16GB, 1 TB 13" with OLED screen. Kindles are much easier on your eyes for reading for long periods which is why I have a Kindle. The Scribe is better for writing on too because of the feel of pen against paper instead of slick glass. The Remarkable is overpriced for what little it does. Base level iPads especially have much power quality text than any kindle and the backlighting is harder on your eyes for any length of time. Anyone who says iPad text is sharper is full of it and I have the very best iPad screen you can buy right now.

Which makes it not even close to an okay reader.

its bad this still has just 1GB of RAM.
So what. That's all it needs given what it does.

My comp sci student wanted something to take notes during lectures, we came to the same conclusion, and this is popular opinion on campus. Those are some smart kids, so we stick to iPad. Maybe if price was under $200... need to budget another $10 for stylus though.
They want an iPad because it does so much more, not because it's better for writing. It's not complicated. shake head

Thanks - this is very helpful. I was eyeballing this model myself and was under impression that no backlight would not be a showstopper. However by eyes are also not great so it looks like this would not work for me.

Doesn't work with any note taking software. Garbage.

Gen 1 scribe owner also. Havent used it much other than reading. What is the simplest way to do what you said - email pdfs to myself, sign them and send back? That sounds very useful. I also tried a boox and not being an android user, gave up on the interface, as I was frustrated getting anything done. Boox support was not good and the instructions awful. At least scribe's interface while limited is intuitive.
Check your Amazon account for the email address associated with your scribe. It should be something like yourname at kindle dot com. You have the ability to change it. When I set mine up, I could designate up to five external email addresses to send documents to my scribe. I sent a pdf to my Kindle email account from my Gmail account. The pdf showed in my scribe library within moments. I signed it. Using the options at the top of the document, it's like a share icon, I sent it back to the associated Gmail address. From Gmail I sent it to whoever needed it.
It would be great if I could just give my kindle email account to anyone but at the time of this writing, only the five could send/receive documents. That said, I know these steps may sound cumbersome but once you do it a few times, it'll feel natural - or at least easier than printing/scanning documents.
Cheers!

No offense sounds like you have a great system worked out. But as far as I know on iPhone (and I'm sure android) can easily do this. You can simply open the pdf and sign then save. No need to go through all this trouble. Unless Im missing something here? You can even do it on a Mac (you can have a saved signature) click on insert and your signature is inserted and you can email the document back.

More like - good enough for writing, plus much more. Can not think of people needing wring more than students do. Also she always liked using colored pens for notes, I don't believe Scribe is there yet on that front.

Sold the original Scribe I had bought on sale for more than I paid and waited for a deal on the new one. Used the 20% off plus the Discover coupon and my gift cards I had stacked and paid $100 for it. Great deal to me

I also see '10% back on the amount charged to prime visa card, making the effective price to be ~$293+tax.'
YMMV
It says 10% back until Dec. 31. Can anybody confirm that it's still valid?

Also an original scribe owner and can 100% concur with this opinion. It has hardware with the potential to be great being held back by it's software.
