I'm an owner of the original Kindle Scribe. It's a great piece of hardware, but it's software is sorely sorely sorely lacking. There's basic functionality that you would expect, missing.

So tech problems someone else mentioned put aside for a memont, The first edition Kindle Scribe was a great piece of hardware For someone who just wants a top of the end Kindle.

But for somebody looking for a robust digital note taker / annotator / etc, I highly highly recommend looking at the Scribe's competitors as well.

A lot of negative reviews reporting edge bleeding, blurry pixels, and dark spots. Wonder if the price drop is clearing out inventory before they get fixed ones in. I'm going to wait.

Remarkable - Great for note taking but okay reader. Also, non-Pro model has no backlight.

Kindle - Great for reading but just okay at note taking.

Remarkable supports epub and PDF, you'll need to remove the DRM & convert your Kindle books with an app like Calibre.

FYI, big price bump, new colors, new pen, but same tablet internals as the original scribe.

From what I can tell, the 'new' scribe is exactly the same hardware as the original one, just with a white bezel and some color options now. The pen has some changes, but there's only one firmware version for the scribe.

Any 'AI' features or whatever are also on the original scribe, and pretty much all the initial issues of the scribe were from releasing it before the software was ready, which has been resolved for months now.

I got one of these for Christmas and I'm returning it. The hardware is nice, the pen feels and writes amazing. I love being able to write notes directly in books. BUT --- there is currently no way to view/sync your notes to your computer without manually emailing your notes to yourself. A huge miss IMO. I'm going to try one of the Boox products.

For anyone looking for a case, there are Like-New conditions of the official leather case for the Scribe for only $29. Normally runs for $80.

This is the older version which uses genuine leather which can patina nicely over time unlike the new one that uses faux plant-based leather.

I'd love a great deal on a color remarkable, demo's one at the local Best Buy and it was great but no replacement for a $1 pad of paper is worth $500

This e-ink technology has evolved very slow and is still very expensive.

Genuine Leather is the lowest quality leather on the market. The name means it's technically leather, but it's not good quality top grain stuff. They effectively cover suede in plastic to make it look like nice leather, until the plastic flakes off in a year.

I wish there was a meaningful trade-in for Scribe 1.0 (e.g. something around 100-150 extra to replace v1 with v2). I'm not inclined to pay full (or discounted) price for v2 - would rather go the Onyx Boox route or even stay with v1 (which is kind of lackluster).
The differences between v1 and v2 are mostly cosmetic, the upgrade is free. Make sure you have the latest firmware.

Gen 1 Scribe owner.
I was introduced to paper tablet who raved about his Remarkable. I highly recommend doing some soul searching while doing your research. If you want a robust paper tablet, there are far better options out there. If you want one that doubles as a reader where you can take notes and integrates with your existing kindle library, this is not a bad option. One of my favorite features is the ability to email pdfs to myself, sign them, and send them back to the requestor - thus eliminating the need to print, sign, scan, send. I've been satisfied. That said, I look forward to the updates that will mimic Gen 2.
What are you waiting for? The update was released last year along with Gen 2 devices, you can download and install it even in offline mode, just google "kindle scribe firmware"

I have iPad Air and Gen 1 Scribe.

Here is why you may like a Scribe
1. Reading outdoors or under direct sunlight, while still usable in the dark
2. Much easier on the eyes. 300dpi is the best screen on the market today
3. Battery life - weeks vs days.

For me it's a distraction free reader where I can easily take notes. I write my summary after every chapter I read. I can then see all my notes and highlights, associated with a book, as a single document for a quick review.

I use my scribe mostly in offline mode. You can install updates and side load books if you are concerned about privacy. Otherwise, sync with the cloud free of charge - unlike Remarkable.

You can get additional 20% off if you send in your old device (doesn't have to be an amazon device) this makes Scribe one of the most affordable in its class.

Reminder: there's a world outside of the Kindle/amazon ecosystem. You can convert your kindle books to .mobi

The patents for e-inks just expired.

Prepare for crazy cheap and unique forms of e-ink displays.

Like what happened when cherry patents expired in mechanical keyboards.

No offense sounds like you have a great system worked out. But as far as I know on iPhone (and I'm sure android) can easily do this. You can simply open the pdf and sign then save. No need to go through all this trouble. Unless Im missing something here? You can even do it on a Mac (you can have a saved signature) click on insert and your signature is inserted and you can email the document back.
That is fair. I don't have an iPhone though. I do think it's great to be able to do that though. I'm definitely not saying to get the scribe solely for this purpose. It's just a nice feature.

I didn't know that. The last I read was that the features would come in 2025. I'll look it up. Thanks!

I found this note. I haven't been able to verify that the new features are available.
"The Kindle Scribe will be getting a software update that'll add some of the new Kindle Scribe 2 features. The old model will get Active Canvas, Extended Margin and AI features in early 2025. Amazon announced four new Kindle models in October 2024, the biggest Kindle refresh so far in the history of the E-Ink devices."
