So tech problems someone else mentioned put aside for a memont, The first edition Kindle Scribe was a great piece of hardware For someone who just wants a top of the end Kindle.
But for somebody looking for a robust digital note taker / annotator / etc, I highly highly recommend looking at the Scribe's competitors as well.
Kindle - Great for reading but just okay at note taking.
Remarkable supports epub and PDF, you'll need to remove the DRM & convert your Kindle books with an app like Calibre.

From what I can tell, the 'new' scribe is exactly the same hardware as the original one, just with a white bezel and some color options now. The pen has some changes, but there's only one firmware version for the scribe.
Any 'AI' features or whatever are also on the original scribe, and pretty much all the initial issues of the scribe were from releasing it before the software was ready, which has been resolved for months now.

This is the older version which uses genuine leather which can patina nicely over time unlike the new one that uses faux plant-based leather.

I was introduced to paper tablet who raved about his Remarkable. I highly recommend doing some soul searching while doing your research. If you want a robust paper tablet, there are far better options out there. If you want one that doubles as a reader where you can take notes and integrates with your existing kindle library, this is not a bad option. One of my favorite features is the ability to email pdfs to myself, sign them, and send them back to the requestor - thus eliminating the need to print, sign, scan, send. I've been satisfied. That said, I look forward to the updates that will mimic Gen 2.
Here is why you may like a Scribe
1. Reading outdoors or under direct sunlight, while still usable in the dark
2. Much easier on the eyes. 300dpi is the best screen on the market today
3. Battery life - weeks vs days.
For me it's a distraction free reader where I can easily take notes. I write my summary after every chapter I read. I can then see all my notes and highlights, associated with a book, as a single document for a quick review.
I use my scribe mostly in offline mode. You can install updates and side load books if you are concerned about privacy. Otherwise, sync with the cloud free of charge - unlike Remarkable.
You can get additional 20% off if you send in your old device (doesn't have to be an amazon device) this makes Scribe one of the most affordable in its class.
Prepare for crazy cheap and unique forms of e-ink displays.
Like what happened when cherry patents expired in mechanical keyboards.

I found this note. I haven't been able to verify that the new features are available.
"The Kindle Scribe will be getting a software update that'll add some of the new Kindle Scribe 2 features. The old model will get Active Canvas, Extended Margin and AI features in early 2025. Amazon announced four new Kindle models in October 2024, the biggest Kindle refresh so far in the history of the E-Ink devices."
