I'm an owner of the original Kindle Scribe. It's a great piece of hardware, but it's software is sorely sorely sorely lacking. There's basic functionality that you would expect, missing.

So tech problems someone else mentioned put aside for a memont, The first edition Kindle Scribe was a great piece of hardware For someone who just wants a top of the end Kindle.

But for somebody looking for a robust digital note taker / annotator / etc, I highly highly recommend looking at the Scribe's competitors as well.

A lot of negative reviews reporting edge bleeding, blurry pixels, and dark spots. Wonder if the price drop is clearing out inventory before they get fixed ones in. I'm going to wait.

Remarkable - Great for note taking but okay reader. Also, non-Pro model has no backlight.

Kindle - Great for reading but just okay at note taking.

Remarkable supports epub and PDF, you'll need to remove the DRM & convert your Kindle books with an app like Calibre.

How does it compare to Boox? Boox seems to check all the right boxes for me, but they're a bit pricey.

That is fair. I don't have an iPhone though. I do think it's great to be able to do that though. I'm definitely not saying to get the scribe solely for this purpose. It's just a nice feature.
I also have the first gen scribe, I personally really like it. I just learned recently that the notes that I took on the pdf docs can't be backed up or seen else where. That currently for me is my biggest concern...

It says 10% back until Dec. 31. Can anybody confirm that it's still valid?
Yes, it's still valid. I bought one 2024 Kindle Scribe 64GB on Jan 4th then I saw 10% reward credited to my Chase Amazon credit card on Jan 6th. Make sure you see under "Paying with Prime Visa XXXX" the line "Get 5% Back, and additional rewards on select item..." on your checkout page.

Just got it as part of this this deal and I am returning without even using it for an hour. The screen refresh is unbelievably bad. I haven't seen this level of lingering artifacts from previous page loads in any kindle in 10 years. There is a no automated hard-refresh (like after 6 pages) like I remember there being in the past. It seems to always be "fast refresh" and it shows up terribly.
I could've lived with the annotation quirks on the software end but the screen kills the device. Maybe, I got a dud .....

What is the discover card coupon? Thx
Discover always has offers for Amazon if you use their card. Mine was only $10 off, but I've seen $15 or up to 30% off if you use their Points

Thankfully this isn't anything that 1st gen owners need. All the software updates will be available on both generations.

Maybe this redesign is an improvement, but hardly an important one.

It's a great device if you want to read, mark/write on pdfs, and use notebooks.

If you don't need more than that, this is an excellent device. Use mine every day.

Quick note on my experience. I got the new Scribe two days ago with the intention of trading in my Gen 1, but in comparing the two the Gen 1 was better in every way. The 2024 Scribe had significant light bleed around the border on 3 sides. With the white border, it looked like a halo around the top, right and bottom of the screen and was very distracting. I also really dislike the white border. Supposedly the screen was changed for improved paper feel. I tried both screens and pens side by side a lot but didn't find any real difference, certainly not any improvement in the new one. I did like the eraser on the new pen over the plastic nub on the original, but mainly because it requires almost no travel to erase. With the original premium pen, i feel like i have to press harder than I'd like to erase.

I ended up just downloading the new firmware and manually updated my Gen 1 with the new feature set. I hate to say it but I wanted to keep the Gen 2 just to have the "newest", but I truly couldn't find a single reason.

Edit: for anyone wanting to upgrade the firmware, Amazon has it for download on their website. The new Scribe version is 5.17.2.

It definitely hard refreshes for me after 6 pages or so. There's a setting to hard refresh every page if you REALLY want. I got the 2022 scribe deal years ago though.

And eink tends to heavily ghost when you first use it in my experience if it hasn't been used in a while. At least it happened to my old DX when I stopped using it for a while.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't heard about it. I actually noticed my Scribe doing something on a few nights ago -- maybe it got tired of waiting for me to update it and finally updated itself on it's own, laugh.

Looking at the (very not-useful) update log, it looks like there's some new annotation features. Glad to here that. Probably not what I most need, but I'm happy for whatever features they can give us.

Not a RAM related problem
The sluggish performance the Reddit poster talks about could be related to RAM. Not to mention that it seems to be related to using the annotation functions. Might just be sloppy coding on the part of whatever subcontractor actually did the work, and an old fashioned memory leak, but could also be that 1GB of RAM just isn't enough for the ambitions of the software.

No. It will work just fine without membership. The Prime card gives you 5% back.

What brand/model would you be suggesting over this scribe?
