I loved the Mach 5s so I ordered several pairs of the 6s (women's) during the Black Friday sales. I think Hoka changed something in the design because these shoes caused a great deal of pain in my arches. They also seemed even narrower than the 5s. I did like how cushioned they felt though.

Mach 4 was the best Mach in terms of comfort. Mach 5 comfort was meh but it had a bouncier midsole . In Mach 4 the arch support was mild. In Mach 5 it got a little more intrusive. I haven't tried Mach 6. Do you feel the insole or the midsole wall pushing into your arch?

Zappos is usually not going to be the end of the story on the discount arc. Smaller websites or even off-price discounters will have them for $70 eventually. But Zappos is a no risk proposition with their easy return process.

Initially, I couldn't feel the pain while I was wearing them - my arches only hurt afterwards. After a few days they hurt while I was wearing them too, and I guess it was more the insole than the midsole causing it, but I'm not sure. I later read somewhere that sometimes shoes with a lot of cushioning can cause arch pain because the cushioning causes instability (or something like that)

What is the best use case for these hokas? Running, tennis, athletic sports?

But not any athletic sports (i.e., stop / start movements)? Like tennis and such? Looking to get tennis or volleyball shoes for my kid.

I actually meant midsole but used "insole" because most people don't understand the difference. Thanks for your input. It sounds like the midsole in the Mach 6 suffers from the characteristic moulded arch "support" that plague most HOKA models. That's disappointing.

The 6 is almost a complete redesign. Not only is the stack substantially thicker, the foam itself is firmer than the 5 (20.4 HA vs 15.9 HA as measured by Runrepeat). There's also the addition of the rubber outsole to the 6 which added a bit to the weight. Pretty much not even the same shoe tbh. This is a great daily though imo (unless it doesn't work with your feet).

No these have a high stack. If you need lateral movement like in tennis don't go for running shoes. Tennis shoes are lower stack, lower drop, firmer midsole and usually much better grip. Their focus is on stability (so you don't roll your ankles) and grip. Running shoes focus more on some combination of comfort and propulsion. You'd be better off with basketball shoes for tennis or volleyball than running shoes. Or just get some cheap tennis shoes.

Definitely not for that. The grip isn't the best for either of those sports. And lateral movement can also cause ankle damage.
