For those of you waiting on a better deal, be aware that the regular price has gone up from last year (49.99 last year vs 59.99 this year per my notes), so the same price may not happen this year. It might be a few dollars higher. I'm tired of waiting so I am getting it now.
Newegg has had a number of gift card deals in the past few months (example https://slickdeals.net/f/17897070-10-newegg-gift-card-email-delivery-5-via-newegg). I got two of them, totaling two $10 gift cards at $5 a piece. So I spent $10 on the gift cards, plus the $2.49 left over after the code, for a total of $12.49 net in my cost for the software.
I too, am waiting… The price will get lower as the month goes on and into February.

I have no idea how this made front page… This price is mediocre at best…

Once it gets to $15 and below then it may be a slick deal but right now it's just Meh.

Any benefit in this when I could use free tax stuff out there
First thing to consider is that the free ones are not free to file state. If you need to file state you are going to pay near the price Block wants. Below is my list of other benefits I find and I find it far outweighs the free options that are not real free as I do have to file state. Even if I did not file state I would definitely pick Block at this cost just for the added features and benefit.
  • Having my returns and data local and secure.
  • Free state returns
  • No limitations on incomes or other income such as rental or self employment. (Many free options will charge for those forms)
  • Knowing I can get to my data and return even if some website is down or decides to close up shop
  • The ability to create multiple unlimited returns that friends and family can use.
  • Not having to create a new web account for each and every family member to file returns
  • Getting five free efiles that family members can use
  • Free amended returns
  • Ability to play with tax scenarios before filing or through the year to help me understand where I can save on taxes.
  • Built in local help and resources that I can access all year long
  • Knowing what the software will do versus finding out after I filling a bunch of data in some service I thought free to only find out out is not when getting ready to file.

If I do delivery gigs and have only 1099s from Amazon, Walmart etc and my wife only W2 as a school teacher which version of this app is enough for us to file our taxes jointly?
Get Deluxe. Any version Basic, Deluxe or Premium will do what you need but Deluxe offers good bit of guidance I assume basic may lack.

I have the same and have been filing with it for many years. It will guide you through the income and deductions for the self employment income. You will create and file Schedule C for self employment income. You can file multiple Schedule Cs for the multiple separate income streams. You could also I guess just combine all the income and expenses of the multiple streams but I think the IRS would probably like the the first and the first would make for a better set of records and books for you and them.

True. I guess it all depends on what you have. The free stuff works for me right now. I used to do h&r block and TT years ago and spent a lot of money when free was sufficient. Maybe once I can afford a house in 80 years I can switch to this
Are you in no tax state? If not, how are you getting that filed free?

Is there a consensus on which one is preferred, TurboTax vs H&R Block? I have used Turbo the past few years but there haven't been any deals on it yet this year.
Well....... Intuit intentionally bundled C-Dilla anti-piracy malware with their 2002 product, resulting in a lot of unnecessary headaches for users. Disabled CD-RW drives, unhaltable monitoring processes, inability to remove even with a HD format.. It was a nightmare.

https://www.nsxprime.com/threads/...uit.10510/

Many many users, myself included, swore to never use an Intuit product again, and 20+ years later I firmly remain in this camp. Manufacturers who take these kind of steps need to know that they will forever lose a percentage of the potential customer base... even one such decision to do this has permanently cost them business.

I moved to H&R Block that year, using Tax Cut, which has morphed to become their current product. I'll stay with them until they do something I object to.

Is the Intuit 2024 product any good? Honestly, I couldn't tell you. All I know is that I will not purchase it, and I will continue to bang the drum by reminding new customers of a decision this maker made years ago. If you choose to do business with them, terrific! But at least you're doing it with your eyes open. And if even one potential new customer decides to go in a different direction, then I've done my job.

It doesn't let you efile state for free. You can prepare state and mail it in or $20 to efile.

I'm okay e-filing federal (for free) and printing/mailing state (for free). It's not cost-effective for me to pay up to the higher S/W level to get free state filing.... I live in Indiana, which is a flat tax state. After a small exemption amount, the rest of my entire AGI is taxed at a combined ~5% rate (state + county combined). I almost ALWAYS owe Indianapolis some money come April, so I'm okay printing the return and mailing it late in the filing season.

I'm only in a hurry if I'm owed a refund - and that's NEVER the case at the state level for me. Smilie

This usually drops to $20, and even hits $18 once or twice later in the season.

I don't even have all my tax forms yet, I think I'll hold out.

I must say, this seems really cheap of me to not just get it for this price and be done with it!!!

If the package says Federal + State it includes a state return but you do not get to efile the state return. You do get five federal efiles. You will have to mail in the state if you want no additional cost and they will try to upsell you the efile fee but I advise to decline it.

I always mail my state return as I refuse to pay the extra for something I can do for the price of a stamp. I'd have no money of I paid for all the things they try to sell me to make my life easy and would have to work more.

I still do not have a clear picture. What are you using to fill in state is my question. Filing it is easy, it is the filling in and calculating part I am wondering about.

Does one of the free services offer it or does your state, or are you just doing it by hand and carrying over numbers from the the online generated federal?

I think I did hear some states are offering filing on the state's websites.

Supposedly there is a way to buy two packages and install on two different computers to get that done. I believe you fill in and calculate on one computer export that file to the second computer which has the other state installed and file all from there.

YMMV and I am just stating what I heard around here. Maybe someone with more knowledge of that will chime in.

I assume that people do it as it is cheaper than buying a second state in the installed software.

I had to do this once a few years ago. My solution was to install the state for one and copy the folder elsewhere. Then I uninstall/switched the 1st state and installed the 2nd state. After copying the 1st state folder back into the proper directory I had access to both states... Not sure if this still works.
