They are definitely handy. I started with a cheap corded harbor freight model years ago and upgraded to this Dewalt a couple of years ago. The harbor freight will get the job done, the Dewalt is a lot smoother (less vibration) and more convenient (cordless and quick-change attachments). With the Harbor Freight, you need to use an allen wrench to remove the bolt and washers to switch attachments and then reassemble. At this price, the Dewalt is definitely worth the extra money.

Already have Dewalt 20v stuff but still debating between this and a cheap corded harbor freight one. Anyone have a recommendation? Are these Oscillating tools really as handy as the internet advertises?

Yes.
A must have.
it's not a precise detail cutting instrument.

A big difference is that the Hercules/Bauer and Milwaukee use an on/off switch and speed dials while the new Ridgid and this DeWalt use a paddle trigger.

Its a big personal preference option and I hated the speed dial/on off switch on the Milwaukee/Ridgids that I had.

I have the Kobalt and this DeWalt. If you are a DIYer, then these are a must have, especially for doing things like indoor trim work. I get the cheapo Chinese attachments off Amazon for these. They don't last as long as the name brand, but you get about 10 for the price of what you would pay for one DeWalt attachment and they still hold up fairly well.

$89 is a solid price. That's what I got mine for off Ebay about a year ago. Battery is 1.5Ah

If only it had the warranty of a Ridgid. You can't beat the Ridgid warranty when you catch a good price!

I have majority of Dewalts 20v line and this is maybe their best tool.

Just a warning about Dewalt oscillator is that it vibrates like crazy making it harder to do precise cut. Compare to the new Makita and Milwaukee M18 and M12 one.

If you need the tool I suggest getting the Makita or Milwaukee and use battery adapter (~$12) for it.

I have three batteries set, Milwaukee M18 Ho, M12 HO and Ridgid MO. I use adapter with the Ridgid battery since their warranty is better if something goes wrong.

DeWalt's positioning of this kit relative to the atomic DCS354 kit is frustrating:
XR DCS356C1:
DCS356 Tool (20,000 OPM, variable speed trigger, 3 speed switch)
1.5AH battery with 1.25A charger
includes bag & 2 blades
Atomic DCS354D1:
DCS354 Tool (18,000 OPM, variable speed trigger)
2AH battery with 2A charger
includes 2 blades
The XR DCS356 is the better tool by a small but significant margin, it should be the clear choice when the kits are comparably priced. But if you're using the tool with the supplied battery, the atomic is likely to be more performant more of the time just because it comes with the better battery. Similarly, if the tool is going to see only occasional use and you're already in the DeWalt 20V line, the 2AH battery and 2A charger are more useful overall. But if you already have higher amperage batteries and expect to use the tool more heavily (or you need the speed limiting switch), this XR kit makes the most sense. This level of market segmentation is absurd.

I have the ridgid oscillating tool and I have found it very useful. That being said, if it wasn't for the warranty, I'd have gotten this Dewalt version.

With countless positive reviews and decent attachment changing system, this is the better tool in my opinion. Good deal on price overall from what I've seen in the past.

I scooped mine up last weekend and already used it twice on a drywall patch. The blade change is worth the price of admission.

I returned my Milwaukee M12 Fuel oscillating as it sucks compared to this. The variable speed trigger makes all the difference in cut control. It also smoked it for speed too, using the same blade the Fuel took almost 30 seconds, the Dewalt 19 seconds. Just get it, you won't regret it
