It takes some configuring, but I've had good experiences with using Google Family to manage my kids devices.
1. Go to the web to find the current minutes, messages, data, and days remaining on your permanent phone.
2. Activate your "donor" phone on the same account.
3. Go to the web to find the current minutes, messages, data, and days remaining on your new, donor phone.
4. Go to support.tracfone.com and scroll down to and click "Chat with Support".
5. Populate the message template below with details of your donor phone and permanent phone and share with the CSR.

Really weird
My neighbor did this... after I told her to do it online. She then told me that she had spent 2 hours of hell on the phone with them. So I dragged her over to my place and had her watch me do it online with my recently delivered phones. It took 10 minutes, 8 of which were waiting for her to write down exactly what I was doing each step of the way.

The *plan* is for 365 days. After that, the phone loses access to the network.
You can also go to settings/network/mobile network and tell it to search for carriers. If it is locked it will show only the TF network. An unlocked phone will show all the carriers.
