I'm sorry, but this is just not a good suggestion. The cheapest used Midtown I could find is around $1500, and the cheapest used Studio that isn't the weird single pickup one without f holes is about $1900. That is not "an extra couple hundred bucks"; that is three to four times the cost of this deal.

These Epiphones are easily the best 335 style guitars for under $500, and if you spend an actual couple hundred dollars more for better pickups (and another $100 to get them installed if you aren't a DIY person), they're easily the best 335 style guitars for under $1000. If you live close to a Guitar Center, they generally will have a couple of these in each color, and it is worth playing and inspecting each one to see which feels and sounds best, and which ones they haven't thrown off the truck.

I'm not doubting that what you paid for those guitars was accurate even a couple of years ago, but it no longer reflects what the used market actually is. It also demonstrates that guitars don't simply depreciate; they do usually tend to until they become vintage, but weird stuff can also happen. For example, Gibson's current exorbitant 335 pricing along with perceived QC issues over the last few years have actually pulled up the prices of the guitars you are referring to.

Good deal for a semihollow; however, after buying, selling, trading, and returning dozens of guitars throughout my life, I've realized that spending the extra buck or two (given you have the budget for it) goes a long way for a quality product. In this situation, I would advise spending the extra couple hundred bucks and score a used Gibson ES-335 Studio or Midtown Standard (I've owned both and loved them).

I also never recommend buying anything new. Like a car, driving it off the lot lowers the value significantly.

That's just my advice. Happy hunting!

Great guitar! Stunning green colour! Many a timeless hit were written on lesser guitars!! If you are a serious player you should buy the green one and keep it forever.

I am wondering where you're seeing Gibson ES-335's for "a couple hundred more". The cheapest I have seen are around $1100.

If you see a Gibson ES335 for $1100 buy several immediately. They are usually $3000 minimum.

The epi is from China. I'd definitely look for a Memphis build, but it will cost a lot more than the China build.

New they run $3500. Used you can get them for $2000. Custom shop and reissues are higher, but often worth the difference in price.

I hope they put that special in tv yellow on sale soon. Feels like they've put several other higher end models on sale recently.

I have seen a few here in NYC. Mostly check at the end of the month on craigslist and someone is selling to try and make rent.

You have to keep your eyes open, and watch ebay, craigslist, etc.

I've picked up some absolute steals over the years, eg. a mint condition Taylor 800 series dreadnought for just over $1k, a 1972 Les Paul custom "fretless wonder" for $2k, a brand new (!!) Martin Custom Shop listed at $10k for only $3k (and let me tell you, it would be worth every penny of $10k).

Solid deal for a semi hollow body. Just remember, for any guitar, get a reputable luthier to set it up (might include some fret crowning work and such). This will make you want to play the guitar and sound good at the same time.

If you want to spend a bit more cash, I recommend cross shopping Sire guitars especially their 335 models (Sire H7)
