I'm not a gamer myself, but this system is significantly more powerful than a Raspberry Pi without a doubt. There is a Linux distro called Batocera.Linux (https://batocera.org/) that is supposedly a turn-key solution for turning mini pc's like this into gaming consoles. Besides that, this comes with an apparently legit copy of Win 11 Pro as part of the $130 price tag.

Anyway, if your goal is retro gaming, a Raspberry Pi is smaller and more energy-efficient for these types of tasks, but honestly, once you add in a case, a good power supply (RPi's are picky with respect to power...), and storage, it is probably at the same price or even more than this $130 machine. But if you are interested in more modern gaming or more powerful emulation, this system would be better and give you more flexibility for future upgrades.
Fyi check out Reddit minipc forum, some users mention that these effectively have ZERO warranty.

Just saying buyers might want to read up.
N150 is a minor bump-up from N100

Is this better than a raspberry pi for the guts of an arcade build?

Its definitely faster than a PI, the only real advantage or reason to buy a PI would be if you wanted to run any premade PI images. Otherwise if youre building it from scratch then might as well get the faster system

You can buy a USB-C to barrel plug adapter for $5
Didn't know that was a thing. Do you have a link for one that would work with this box?

This one's tempting. But N97 is higher performance than both of them, and there have been multiple N97 NUC deals with 16GB RAM for $130 as well.

How do you figure out which barrel fits (diameter) and has the right watts, etc?

You are right that there is not a huge difference between the two, but the N150 apparently has the same 6W envelope as the N100 (i.e., it does not have higher electricity consumption). Plus, the part is two years newer. So with the same power envelope and a few other slight enhancements, I would rather get an N150 over an N100 when they are effectively the same price. If you want a deep dive to see how similar/different the two processors are, here's a comparison link at Intel:

Just an FYI but TDP is not power consumption. TDP as published by intel is used to spec the cooling needed under max load. When you're dealing with such low power CPUs though the difference is negligible under normal use or even full load.

The listing on amazon lists that this unit uses a 12v 3a power adapter, so any 12v cable should work, example here [amazon.com].

Fair enough, but my response was trying to address the suggestion that the N150 has a higher power/electrical draw than the N100. Unfortunately, I skipped a few connecting steps along the way...

In particular, since the N150 and N100 are close to identical beside a few modest clock frequency bumps for the the N150, they probably have similar efficiencies. If anything, the N150 might have a slightly better efficiency give two years of potential process improvements. Given this, the heat they generate is probably directly proportional to the energy they consume and since they are spec'ced for the same TDP to dissipate heat, the are probably drawing about the same amount of electricity for any given task.

Because the N150 has a few modest speed bumps, it might have a slightly greater instantaneous electrical draw than the N100 for any given calculation or operation. But it would also finish that operation slightly more quickly. The N100, in turn, might use slightly less power than the N150 on an instantaneous basis, but it takes longer for any single operation. Thus, when integrated over time, the total cumulative electrical draw for either of the processors for any particular operation should be similar.

I personally do not think this is a very good deal just cause its a celeron chip. You should be able to find similarly specced Intel Stick pcs for like $100

I have the N100 version. Been running it for a few months as a Plex Server. I am in absolute awe that it can handle 3 4k HDR to 1080p SDR transcodes simultaneously with minimal power consumption. 10+ 1080p to whatever transcodes. Compared to the Xenon machine I came from, this barely moves the power meter. Handles my large library with ease (have 60TB+ using a Mediasonic JBOD array connected via USB)

Not only that, but for basic web-browsing office work - totally fine.

The reason it's capable is 'quick sync' which is on most of the newer intel cpus, and N100/N150 is the lowest power one people swear by, FWIW!

as PI's have increased in price, they've lost some of their benefits. once a potential buyer moves into the $75-150 price range, most office refurb computers sold on ebay and mini pc's sold on amazon, out perform the PI in almost every use case.

I'm planning to replace my son's aging HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF with this mini PC. He mostly plays Minecraft on it. Would this be able to run Minecraft @ 1080p?
Quote from pdp76 :
The n150 should run Minecraft Bedrock just fine, as long as you're not going crazy with mods and such.

But if you want to compare the n150 performance with the HP you currently have, we need to know what CPU is in the HP and if there is a separate GPU. Chances are, it's so old and small, that it doesn't have a separate GPU, so the n150 will likely perform better than it.
