Do these have to bounce off the ceiling or can I place them top left/right of the room pointed directly at the seating area? I have cathedral ceilings.

edit: Nvm, I see the answer:

ON-WALL OPTIONS
The Klipsch RP-500SA II Surround Speakers can also be utilized as an on-wall elevation or surround speaker via its easy-to-use keyhole mounting system - delivering the perfect angle for enhanced sound effects.

Does anyone know if there a substantial difference between these and the RP-500SA that are currently $300 at Crutchfield?

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_714...Ebony.html

I would be using them as wall-mounted height channels in a 5.1.2 system. The rest of the system is all Infinity Reference series, and I've always heard that Klipsch can be a bit brighter than other more neutral speakers, but I'm not sure how important it really is to timbre match height channels.

From what I've read, get version II since it's only $20 more. AVS forum recommended getting version I to save money, but that's not the case here.

These vs. bipole vs. satellite vs. bookshelf speakers like the RP-500M/600M II as surrounds in a 15' x 18' living room w/ MLP pushed forward 3-5' from the back wall? Thinking the 600M are overkill and I'm better off saving some cash with the 500M. No decent sales on bipoles or satellites yet, but I'm willing to wait if some periodic discount is coming up.

I have the RP-500 prior gen but using as upfiring Atmos. I have 2 sets of RP-150Ms and a pair of RP-160ms. The monitors/bookshelves RP-500M/600M are best used at ear level, so on stands or mounted lower on the wall for surrounds, if that is the placement you are looking for then get these or the bipoles. I've never run bipoles, but hear there are pros and cons. Pros are more room filling sound dispersion with the dual tweets and drivers, but less pin-point sound, so for home theater some like to be able to pin-point sounds wheras bipoles spread the sound in a wider dispersion. The RP-500SA are best mounted high on the wall with the tweeters pointed to the main listening position; or used as upfiring Atmos. If you want to mount your speakers higher, I'd go with these 500SA.

Thanks for your helpful insight. With the way my living room is formatted, the surrounds must be placed 8'~9' high. I was planning to use bookshelves or sats flipped upside down on stands and angled down toward the MLP but sounds like these are better regardless? The RP-500M II are $270/pair (plus the cost of mounting brackets) right now and I'm considering a 7.0 setup with them (want to save room and have the JBL 590s; side-note: is 7.x even worth it in such a small room?). I figure bookshelves/sats provide such customizable pin-point directionality.

With the SVS Ultra Surround bipole (just found out it's OOS), only one pair would be needed running in Duet mode for 7.x but they'd need to be flush with the wall or else the surround channels will be firing at weird angles. Not ideal at such a height.

In my experience every speaker is important/matters.
It starts with the foundational core/base layer 5.1 ones.
I would suggest using the 500 or 600 as surrounds.

Going to 7.1 you need to have the space for it to be worthwhile imo.
Here is the recommendation for it.

Don't buy Klipsch. Over priced under perform
I see this generic Klipsch hate on almost every single thread, rarely with any kind of detail behind it. Yet, aside from the most entry-level stuff, actual reviews of Klipsch speakers (RP line for example) generally seem pretty favorable in the bang-for-your buck category.

Looking specifically at angled speakers intended for wall-mounted height channels, there are not a lot of options below the $300 price point--basically you have Polk OWM3 or JBL Stage 240H. What else am I missing, if I want something low profile, and not a bookshelf speaker on an angled mount?

I am helping a friend/co-worker with his basement theater install. Since he has to finish his whole basement, plus afford a receiver, projector, screen, and 9 speakers, I told him to look into the Dayton 5.1 setup and do 4 ceiling mounted Dayton 6.5" speakers. The height channels will be two in front of MLP and 2 behind MLP. The rears will be the 6.5" Dayton bookshelf speakers with angle mounts to point the tweeters to the MLP.

He really like the way my Klipsch Heritage Theater sounds (Chorus II, Forte II and Academy Center) but he doesn't have the budget yet. My Theater is 5.2.4 with bass shakers in the seats. I also demoed my Reference Premier living room, which is impressive, but slightly less so than then Heritage speakers. It's a 5.2.2 Reference Premier system.

When we started adding up the RP setup I could tell he was thinking about more entry level budget, so we will see how the Dayton sounds. I told him that eventually he could upgrade the speakers and likely reclaim a good amount if he sells the Daytons.

I think that Dirac Live will benefit his room and I bet we can get his setup calibrated nicely.

Yeah, I'd like to do ceiling mount speakers because there are so many more options, but my room is only 14' wide with 9' ceilings, so to get the recommended 45* vertical angle on two height channels, in-ceiling speakers would end up pretty close to the wall anyways. That, and it's a finished ceiling with plumbing for a toilet, 2 sinks, a tub, and a shower directly above and running much of the length of the room, so I'm a little averse to doing any cutting!

there is my recommendation.
if you care about sound quality you would avoid Klipsch in 99% of cases.

here is a good read for those interested in Klipsch
