I don't think intel has anything to make it worth while. They have become complacent in the chip world.
Also the M5 likely coming out in the second half of this year, it's a moving target.
I assume the SSD cannot be upgraded to 1TB or higher. At this price point, 512GB seems to be a set back on otherwise sold specs.

Next generation intel chip coming out second half of this year. 1.8nm architecture versus this 3nm architecture. Specs aren't released. Just something to keep in mind.

Will the next macbook be running an intel chip? No? Then yeah, irrelevant.

You can configure one with a larger drive, but the pre-built's can't be upgraded.

If you need more storage, look into external/network drives instead.

I don't know if you were living under a rock. But this is how apple specs laptop tiers. I agree with your sentiment though. 512gb is like 8gb ram. Barely enough to sustain an active user and inadequate for someone who is migrating from another laptop.

And that is also the reason I am looking at windows laptops instead. Half the price for twice the storage. 25% more value even after the build quality difference.
Yes, sir living under rock for apple, never owned a MacBook but would like to !

What are we storing on a laptop full time that takes up 1tb of space? There are much better and safer options for storage that doesn't require it being on-board anymore.

Large scratch files? Maybe. Temp files for projects? Maybe. But a $100 thunderbolt 4 drive can be as quick and a great option for those needing that and more storage.

Lifelong PC user, until I switched to Mac couple years ago. There is definitely a lot more value/specs with PCs and I still say that Windows UI is better. Stupid things like a files count in a directory isn't a default thing in Finder and you moving files from one directory to another is supremely inefficient. However, the primary reason for my move was the M1 processor. For video processing, there is no comparison - I had to make the move.

Also, the iPhone works well with a Mac. Microsoft couldn't make Windows Phone a thing - still the best interface and speed in my opinion, but the apps war killed it.

This is a tempting deal, but geez only 512GB? It's so Apple to do that.

Well. I got all of those and cloud storage. But my current drive is up to 600gb. I can't migrate to this and don't want to constantly manage ssd space.

Exactly!! I don't know what's up Apple charging premium prices on pro laptops and refusing to spec for pro users. Even with cloud and external drives, I don't understand how this is a pro level storage option, considering the retail price is over 2k.

And don't get me started on 128gb base storage on iPhone Pro. Just not enough without regular pruning. Price increases every year but specs stay baselined for a decade.

Finder --> View --> Show Status Bar

Two finder windows, drag and drop between them

I've used a mac for work since 2017 and personally since the Pismo Powerbooks. I'm also a photographer shooting RAW since 2003. Largest on-board storage I have is 1TB in my personal laptop and my work is 512GB. None of them ever come close to maxing out because large and long term storage sits on a NAS that's backed up to the cloud. My work computer being 512GB is sitting at 120GB used. Any files are on shared drives, OneDrive, or Sharepoint. The need for onboard storage is an old way of looking at computer specs...there are much better ways to handle storage.

NAS...the answer is a NAS.

Pros don't use on-board storage like you're thinking they do. It's temporary storage until it is offloaded to a long term solution like a NAS, server, cloud, etc.

they increased to 256gb this year. However, you're not thinking past your own bias here. Why would you as a company increase base storage if the vast majority don't take advantage of it? Those that do know to get a model higher. I upgraded mine to the 512gb option instead of the 256gb option beacuse I knew I needed it. Same with a laptop or automobile configuration...they offer the base model for people who don't need the extras. and those that do, upgrade themselves and get what they need. This isn't hard.
