I have a 9 Pro and no issues with overheating, nor does my wife have issues with her 8. There's bound to be dud units no matter what phone you buy.

my wife has the pixel 8 since launch and hasn't had any issues, she loves it. I just got the pixel 9, moving from the pixel 5a that did just get the black screen of death after almost 4 years (but they did give me a brand new pixel 7 for my troubles, which i will give to my son to replace his pixel 4a when i can pry it from his fingers.
So both my wife and I's pixel 5a did get the black screen of death after a few years, hers maybe only took a couple years. Other than that we've been quite happy with pixels for years and years.
my two daughters have iphone 12 pros and I have to admit they have been excellent as well.

There's a Reddit thread as well with a huge list of referral codes for an extra 10% off Pixel Phones, which in this case takes an extra $50 off the total bringing it down to $349.

So normally the Pixel 8a [google.com] is $499 unlocked, but the Google Store currently has it on sale $100 off for $399 (so same price as Pixel 8 on Amazon). And then the additional 10% off codes I mentioned calculate based off the original $499 price, so the extra 10% off brings it down from $499 - $100(sale) - $50(referral code) = $349.
Again that's only for the 8a though… I checked and the Pixel 8 is still regular price in Google Store where the referral codes would work. Still a pretty good deal on the 8a directly from Google if people want to save an additional $50 for that model.
Don't bother with Pixel 8 non-pro, it's not worth it this late. Get the 9 (now) or 9a (soon), or wait for Pixel 10 this year.

Yes, if you can wait for 9a great, but that is true for most phones, most of the time.
The 8/8a are fine unless you expect to become a servant to Gemini, or you live in a rural area.
