In case it helps anyone - I bought 3 of these last month from Best Buy and put them in a TrueNAS Scale server I have after error checking them. Transferred 18 terabytes onto a RAID-Z1 array and no issues reading and writing at normal speeds.

No clue if the drives are CMR, SMR or whatever. They work for me. I keep redundant backups. I wouldn't trust these or any drives without at least one other backup of the data somewhere. All drives fail sooner or later.

It's more consumers don't look at warranties. A split between cost driven consumers waiving then for the lowest price, and some either accepting they'll never claim them and/or that it's too complicated to do.

For the savvy there's also whole home tech warranties, and for many of us with a Best Buy worth of tech at home, that can pencil out.

Some people were saying that these are Seagate Barracuda ST20000DM001 can you confirm? I had those in my NAS and they died after a little over 2 years , there is no warranty if you shuck them. You only get around 150 MB/s .

Got one last time, works fine for plex, but it is SLOOOOW. Just an FYI. Copying 10tb over to it was averaging around 75MB/s.

Seems like these drives are a crapshoot based on the hundreds of comments between here and reddit. I rolled the dice and picked one up yesterday.
FWIW the copy I have is quiet and averaged 158MB/s transferring 9TBs of data over USB from another USB external. Seems comparable to other Seagate and WD external drives I've picked up over the years. Its still in its enclosure for now, if I don't see any issues with it within the return window I'll be shucking it and throwing it in a DAS used for a media server.

I have a pair of these in a mirror configuration using Windows Storage Spaces. Backed up over 15TB in one go and it was able to maintain about 250MB/sec the entire time. Of course, I do have an external fan blowing on them, as these heat up like nobody's business.

Bought two last year, good deals but they are noisy/vibration and never had a noise problem like that with WD. And today this happened, which is scary.

I used Google search. I had searched the BarraCuda HAMR hard drive about a month ago. I got a totally different answer. The search told me Seagate only used CMR in concert with HAMR. I saw the same redacted picture.
