No clue if the drives are CMR, SMR or whatever. They work for me. I keep redundant backups. I wouldn't trust these or any drives without at least one other backup of the data somewhere. All drives fail sooner or later.

This comes brand spanking new with 1yr warranty.
You buy a beat up 5 yr old drive from one of the refurbishers and comes with 3-5 yrs.
Just lets me wonder how much faith have we lost in the retail type of drives...
For the savvy there's also whole home tech warranties, and for many of us with a Best Buy worth of tech at home, that can pencil out.
FWIW the copy I have is quiet and averaged 158MB/s transferring 9TBs of data over USB from another USB external. Seems comparable to other Seagate and WD external drives I've picked up over the years. Its still in its enclosure for now, if I don't see any issues with it within the return window I'll be shucking it and throwing it in a DAS used for a media server.
Which model time machine are you running?

no way i will ever use these in true nas . Maybe unraid if i can determine if they are CMR
no specs listed and software really doesnt tell us. Also WD has used SMR drives before without telling customers the real specs.
AI Overview
unaware of the SMR implementation.
Key points about this issue:
Hidden SMR:
Some WD drives, particularly lower capacity WD Red NAS drives, were found to utilize SMR technology without clear disclosure in product descriptions or specifications, leading to customer complaints about unexpected performance issues.
Impact of SMR:
SMR drives can have significantly slower write speeds compared to CMR drives, especially when writing large amounts of data consecutively, making them less suitable for applications like NAS (Network Attached Storage) where frequent writes are common.
Customer backlash:
This practice drew criticism from users and tech communities who felt misled by WD's lack of transparency regarding SMR usage in certain drives.
