Seoul is literally safer than any major US city. You can leave your laptop out and no one would take it.
I just went to South Korea in late November. Came back in early December. Seoul did get a really rare snow dump. But, we left to Busan by train, and Busan was really nice. All in all, the weather in South Korea around that time was nice! It wasn't much colder than where I live in Central Coast California. Late Dec is when it starts to get COLD.

I would HIGHLY recommend going. Seoul and Busan was freaking incredible. South Korea was my favorite place ever to visit. Also, the USD to Won is strong now, so it's cheap there. The food was SUPER cheap. Michelin star bowl of ramen was $7 USD. Sit down BBQ was $20 USD including beer. And the best thing about Seoul as a foreigner is almost everyone speaks some English. The younger adults are quite fluent. Whereas, I was surprised that hardly anyone in Japan seemed to speak English.
WOW! Anytime it's around $800 is an awesome deal!! Seoul is so nice, safe and FUN!

Only 35 miles to the DMZ kind of fun. Really intelligent travelling idea for any native American! Have a nice family vacation!
I doubt very much that YOU are a Native American. Do you live on a Reservation?
I've been UNDER the DMZ in a tunnel they dug back in the day, it's big enough for a Tank to drive through! It's a tourist attraction now. You sound like you cower in your bunker a lot, I'm sure you would have bone spurs if our Draft ever got reinstated..

Fun in a socially-regressive sort of way or actual fun where there's alcohol and partying?
S. Korea is ALL about alcohol and partying! Ever heard of Soju and beer before? They party harder than any US city and NO ONE has to drive home! The subway and bus systems are FANTASTIC and CLEAN! Look up some Youtube videos..
And YES, you can leave your laptop and phone on the table at a coffee shop and go to the restroom, they will be there when you get back.

They've had this deal for a while now. I booked a roundtrip flight recently a few weeks ago for late march to mid may for $660. Dunno about prices now for United but I've also seen ads for Air Premia having some sort of sale as well right now (they also fly from SFO)

Edit: Just realized Air Premia was brought up in the details. In any case, they're a good alternative. They're a hybrid airline where you get free checked bags and meals, but you have to pay for snacks and drinks (only water and coffee are free for economy passengers).
I flew Air Premia when they first started for $800 RT from LA. The legroom in coach is insane!! The lady on the aisle could stay seated when I got up to use the restroom! I've never seen that much legroom on any plane. The food was great too. Spring and Fall are the best times to visit, just like most places..
Also, the exchange rate is great right now, most of the world has had way worse inflation than the US, so the dollar is STRONG!

I'm sitting in ICN on a layover as I type this. It's a long flight but the A380 is an amazing aircraft.
Hopefully you're not in econ and have to wait for luggage. I've never seen so much luggage come off a plane before but I got to watch almost all of it come out before mine.

I was in Seoul last August and it's an oven. But the nightlife is great so it's manageable.

Um no. I left a pair of Oakleys on the locker bench at a ski resort. Came back exactly 2 minutes later and they were gone.

I lived in South Korea for many years. Blizzards and strong winter winds are rare, unless you're on the coast.

LOADS of Chinese tourists in S. Korea, especially at a ski resort.
Impossible for most Americans to tell the difference without talking to them..

Asians (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese) can tell the difference between Chinese and Korean but harder to tell between Korean and Japanese because both somewhat related.

Between Japan and S Korea, I'd rather go to the latter. The nightlife is insane, and even though the subways stop at 12 am, buses are 24/7 (at least in Seoul). Also find accommodation to be cheaper in Seoul compared to Tokyo. I do plan on stopping by Osaka and Busan during this upcoming trip so I'll see what it's like over there.
