The exact one I linked should be the x870e which is what I got. It had more features and I saw it worth the extra bit of cash. Never cheap out on a motherboard, because you'll be feature locked in a few years when you want to add something but can't because you wanted to save $50-100 a few years ago
I got this CPU for $247 on the Micro Center bundle deal last week ($550 with motherboard and 32gb RAM). It is truly powerful and was a significant upgrade from my previous Intel i9-9900k. About 1.3x - 1.5x performance across all tests. Also improved my 3080 about 5-20fps depending on the game. Highly recommended CPU but perhaps get it in a bundle if you're already looking for a matching motherboard.

Yes, the tech in this bundle all released within the past year, so it is totally compatible with an RTX 5070. Just be sure that you get the proper power supply to juice the whole build and you'll be fine.

oh and you'll need to get a cpu heat sink if you get that bundle. it doesn't come with one

So I don't really need to upgrade, but what do y'all think of upgrading from a 7700x? For mostly gaming and software development
Gpu: 7900xt
ram: 64gb
Well.. Only you can tell your needs and what isn't sufficient for you. What type of software development are you doing. Have you compared benchmarks?

For gaming upgrades, it's better to go for 9800x3d. If you do need additional cores 9900x is fine.

I paid $409 for one of these in late December. Earlier that month they were $365.

If you don't need it then save your money for when you do need it.. then you can buy the best CPU/stuff at the time you need it.

Gotta agree with TidalWaveOne on this one. If you don't "need" it, save your money. I suggest to use that money towards a better GPU Wink

I don't know if we can say that's true yet. And further AMD CPUs are made in Taiwan and the US is close with them in trade. Plus with TSMCs new factory in Arizona who knows maybe some will be made here.

But any made in China parts may increase.

But there are news that some tariffs on Taiwan might be possible, and the Arizona facility it's gonna take a while to be up and running

WOW, we are basically twins right now... I also am coming from a 9900k and a 3080 ti, and have been eyeing up the same combo deal from Microcenter. I am glad you had success and improvements with the 9900X, and MSI X870E... I need to make the drive now haha.

Heck yeah! This was one of those stars-aligned builds that snuck up on me. I was prepared to just duck under the coming tidal wave and wait for something in the future. But just like nabbing a 3080 way back before price hikes, if you feel like it's time, then there's no better time than the present. I have zero buyers remorse, especially now that I retooled my i9 as a Proxmox server, it's a win-win. If you decide to grab one too then enjoy your drive!

My city just got one within the past year, I know your pain. Make sure you let them know that you're interested so that they can consider your city next!

The only thing I don't like is the fragile AM5 socket pins. Be careful when inserting the CPU in the socket.

While only a little bit slower than 14th gen i7 for production it will consume 80 watts less at load.
I recommend buying those AM5 frames. Remove 4 screws, take out the bracket, insert CPU with the arrow pointing the right direction, place frame over CPU and 4 screws.

$8 option so you don't have to force the lever down onto the CPU.

I also have the i9-9900k and caught wind of this bundle. I need a productivity chip so the 9800x3d isn't really in my wheelhouse, but the 9900x is! I'm still going to hold out for the 9950X3D before I decide.

How hot do these chips run compared to a 9700x? I plan on air cooling and don't want the PC to sound like a jet engine when I'm using it. The 9700x is probably more than I need, but this is tempting for the price.

3 days late but I don't see much advantage in running new default tdp vs eco mode based on initial reviews. Most coolers these days, 120w or so tdp is nothing but I'd probably still flip back to eco mode
